550.0. "Cab Calloway" by OSOV03::KAGEYAMA (I Got Rhythm) Fri Apr 25 1997 00:39
Are there Cab Calloway or "Hi-De-Ho Man" fan?
I've heard his "St. Louis Blues" recently and was amazed. It's really a
jumping number with repetitive horn riffs. His voice is overwhelming.
Considering it was recorded in 1930, his sense is far ahead of time.
I came to know his "Minnie the Moocher" through "Blues Brothers" movie
but my interest stopped there at that time. He should deserve more than
a comical band leader.
I might pick up the following CD.

Album Review:
Calloway is long overdue for a reappraisal. Long put down by some writers as
a mere entertainer, he was actually a superior jazz-influenced singer whose
vocal abilities were often overshadowed by his showmanship. The ideal way to
acquire his best recordings are to get the 11 CDs in Classics' Complete
series. Not only do these reissues include his hits but some jazz
instrumentals and enjoyable obscurities that give one a more well-rounded
picture of the "Hi-De-Ho Man." This particular Classics CD has his first 24
recordings; from the start his colorful style was already fully formed. It
is particularly interesting to hear Calloway performing some material
associated with others, especially "Happy Feet" (Paul Whiteman), "The
Viper's Drag" and "I'm Crazy 'Bout My Baby" (the latter two with Fats
Waller) along with several Duke Ellington hits. Calloway's band in the early
days (one of the better Harlem orchestras) had been formerly known as The
Missourians and included several fine soloists, particularly trumpeter
Lammar Wright and Walter Thomas on tenor and baritone. Highlights include
"St. Louis Blues," "Some of These Days," a classic rendition of "St. James
Infirmary," "Nobody's Sweetheart" and the original version of "Minnie the
Moocher." ~ Scott Yanow [All Music Guide]

I'm a fan of his orchestras, for the great players he helped showcase.
Prime example: Chu Berry. A sizable portion of Chu Berry's best sax
features were with Calloway & Orch. ...
I also agree Cab Calloway deserves more attention for his musical talents,
but am not a fan of jazz vocalizing in general. (For example, I listen to
Fats Waller for the piano solos and songwriting... though it is
impossible to completely resist his vocal charms... 8) - Jay
