4316.0. "Adding a group on BDC in all PW domain" by VMSNET::L_GULICK (Lew Gulick) Wed Jun 04 1997 18:56

Seems odd that this hasn't come up before, but I can't find it anywhere
in here.

Customer has PDC and several BDC's. All servers are Alpha, OpenVMS 6.2,
PATHWORKS V5.0E eco1. He is losing groups on the BDC's at various
times we are attempting to characterize. This leads to the question.

If one runs admin/path on a BDC, properly logs on to the domain and adds
a user, then the addition is actually made on the PDC. When replication
occurs, all of the BDC's get the info. So far, so good. But what
happens if one adds a group under the same conditions? Does that group
get added on the PDC, or just the local server? How should it work?

I don't have multiple nodes to test with.

Thanks for any help,

Lew

All modifications to the UAS are only made on the primary.

    Adrie.

PS Watch out with replication. A BDC will mark with a full
sync all UAS records invalid. It then receives the sync data
and then scans all records again to see which ones are invalid.
    Those should be deleted.

Thanks, Adrie. We have saved a copy of accounts.lmx after adding the
groups again. We can then compare if he sees this again.

What he says happens (more than once), is that the groups he is using
are not there when he reboots the backup server. This seems rather
odd since the file should not be involved in any way.

Will update when there is more data.

    Lew,

there will be an unsupported tool to verify the local us file soon.
Watch the pctools conference for announcement.

I scans the uas file for groups, users and users in the groups.
It will check the sync flag, indication of a failed full sync and will
give you a indation the last valid added user(s).

Thanks, Rob. That is impressive! Another *very* useful tool.
