--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Hi,

We have seen a real performance killer.
When a customer uses UCX as transport for pathworks and reports a very
    slow network please read on:

When you look at the server you don't see any server activity.
So there is no reason why this system is slow. Issue the following
    command:

    $ UCX
    UCX> SHOW COMMUNICATION
    Communication Parameters

    Local host: utruin Domain: uto.dec.com

    Cluster timer: 5
                                     Maximum Current Peak
    Interfaces 20 3 3
    Device_sockets 300 51 53
    Routes 65535 477 481
    Services 200 20 20

Type: FDDI Free Maximum Max Bytes Minimum MinBytes
    Large buffers 20 70 331520 10 47360
    Small buffers 150 1000 256000 50 12800
    IRPs 20 200
    Non UCX buffers 10

    Remote Terminal
      Large buffers: 10
      UCBs: 4
      Virtual term: disabled

This screen tells yo the maximum buffer sizes in this case for large buffer
70 and for small buffers this is 1000.

    Now issue the following command:

    UCX> SHOW COMMUNICATION /MEMORY

                                       MBUF Summary

     IRPs 1 40 41 0 0

Small clusters Large clusters Non UCX buffers
     Free 0 0 0

Now watch the peak values: If they are equal to the maximum values from
the command before you are in trouble. You have to increase the values!

You can do that on the fly. Don't forget to modify the permanent
    values!

    regards,
    	Paul Bakker
