4244.0. "pwrk$lmsrv eats cpu & I/O - users doing nothing" by VMSNET::L_GULICK (Lew Gulick) Wed Apr 02 1997 23:53
Customer has a 2-node Alpha 1000 4/233 cluster. VMS 6.2-1H3, PW 5.0E.
He has one share defined. This is a monster. It is used somehow for
Lotus Notes. He has one session, which is connected to the share. I
just logged out of his system. It is after hours now, and the single
session has no files open. The client is NT 3.51 (server). Transport
is TCP/IP only.
Pwrk$lmsrv is chugging away at something and accumulating I/O and CPU
rapidly. Gets about 40% of the CPU and ever increasing BIO and DIO.
The share has about 45gb of data and about 20,000 files and directories.
The process seems to always be at PC 80000304, although I only let the
trace run for about 1 minute.
I have lots of info gathered for elevation. Some is below. Any ideas?
Only pwmon is >80 characters.

| I am currently working on a similar CLD. We have found the
cause of this one and are preparing a fix for the cpu bound
activity. There is however another error that causes this
problem and we haven't tracked this one down yet.
The best thing you can do is to crash the system and send
us the dump. (offcourse crash when the problem is active).

Thanks Adrie, we should be able to do that with this customer.
Should be on it's way today.

| Mind you that the 2 errors are most likely different.
Check if the client is sending smb requests
Check if decnet netbios MC's are send
Disable the alerter and see if the problem disappears.
Most likely lotus notes might be doing something like
getting a full directory of the tree and that might time
out on win 95. Increase the session timeout on win 95.
