4220.0. "Win95 reports incorrect free space on FAT volume" by UTRTSC::HARLE () Fri Mar 21 1997 04:05

OpenVMS 6.1/Pathworks 5.0D-eco3

A FAT volume of 36OKB results in a DSK file of 720 blocks. OK

PCDISK SHOW DRIVE reports:

	total:	362 496
	free:	311 296

So, total number of bytes occupied:

	362 496 - 311 296 = 51200.

PCDISK DIR reports:

	total: 23 686
	SECURITY.LMX is 16 384

So, total number of bytes occupied:

	23 686 + 16 384 = 50 070.

I assume the cluster size of the FAT volume is 2048, and I
assume PCDISK SHOW DRIVE reports only in cluster units:

	362 496 = 177 x 2048
	311 296 = 127 x 2048
	 51 200 = 50 x 2048

This explains the difference between 51 200 and 50 070.

So, on the server side, I'm happy with de numbers reported.

The problem is on the client side. In my case I connect to
the autoshare from a Win95 client, and I get the following
numbers:

DIR/S from a Win95 DOS box reports:

	bytes used: 29 208
	bytes free:	229 376

DIR/A/S from a Win95 DOS box reports:

	bytes used: 45 592
	bytes free:	229 376

The difference between 45 592 and 29 208 is 16 384
which is exactly the size of SECURITY.LMX. That is
about the only number I can understand.

The number of bytes used and bytes free do not seem
to make any sense. Can somebody explain this for me,
or should this be IPMT'd ?
