4219.0. "5.0E, WFWg NetBEUI = performance problems" by TREES::THOMAS () Thu Mar 20 1997 09:11

A customer recently changed his PC clients from using the PATHWORKS V5
DECnet protocol to using WFWg NetBEUI and TCP/IP. The clients also
switched from CCS licenses to concurrent use licensing, and now have no
PATHWORKS client software on them. The server is an Alpha 2000 running
OpenVMS 6.1, UCX 4.1-eco2, PATHWORKS 5.0E. NetBEUI is being used
because I have been unable to get a domain logon over TCP/IP (different
problem). There are 30 PC clients. In addition to file services they
also connect to an Oracle Rdb database through SQL/Services running on
    the same server via TCP/IP.

After the PC protocol switch the CPU has become swamped, with
PWRK$LMSRV being the major consumer of CPU resources. Without DECps I
have no actual before and after numbers. The server configuration and
the amount of client work have been constant for a couple of years
(other than the recent upgrade to 5.0E and UCX 4.1) with no significant
performance problems. Logging onto the system took about 2 minutes last
night. The CPU was running at 100% utilization, with PWRK$LMSRV using
    40-80% of the CPU.

This comes two weeks after upgrading another customer from PATHWORKS
4.1 to 5.0E using the same WFWg client configuration. This time a pair
of VAX 4700s were brought to their knees by PATHWORKS cpu utilization.
After numerous calls to CSC, I was told that this increase in CPU
utilization from 4.x to 5.x was normal. Here I do have before and
after DECps numbers, with PATHWORKS now taking an additional 24% of the
CPUs during peak usage (180 PC clients) compared to 4.x.

Does anyone know of a 5.0E / NetBEUI (WFWg native networking software)
    performance problem?

We are in the process of removing NetBEUI from all the PCs and using
TCP/IP only. I'll post the results.

    No performance problems.

You probably stumbled into some other problem, like a client
that sends out a lot of junk to keep the server very busy.

    Use standard procedure.

Make IRIS trace and monitor the net (everything to/from the
    server)

Base your conclusions and action on the outcome of that trace.
