Hi. We have a Pathworks customer who uses the Pathworks alias and TCP/IP as their protocol. They know that by defining server addresses in the LMHOSTS file they can reduce broadcast traffic when connections are made. How would you define the Pathworks alias in the LMHOSTS file (ie. what IP address?) Thanks. Grant.

You DON'T define it. Adrie

The cluster alias does not have an address, and therefore is not a candidate for LMHOSTS. (standard answer) However it can be worked around, but then you MUST have: 1. Pathworks/VMS server at 5.0D-ECO3 at least 2. A WINS server, normally a NT 4.0 server. 3. WINS enabled on the client, W95 and NT has this capability. 3a. Your clients must have WINS capability Then you enter the Pathworks cluster alias in the WINS server as a multihomed host, that means that the cluster alias in the WINS server will have the addresses of all the servers in the Pathworks cluster. This will disable the load balancing Pathworks calculates, but the WINS server will do some 'round robin' on the addresses that are associated with the cluster alias. Have done it, and it works. Have fun.... Jesper

Thanks for the responses. The customer does not yet have a WINS server. Possibly in a couple of months. Currently they have 2 VAX's and an Alphaserver as their Pathworks servers. They are going to be removing the 2 VAX's as servers sometime in the next few weeks. Since there will no longer be a benefit in using the alias should they: - add the alias to the LMHOSTS file with the same address as the Alphaserver? or - have the users change all their connections from the alias to the Alphaserver host name? Thanks. Grant.
4201.4 | Use the nodename | COPHK::JESPER | Wed Mar 12 1997 15:55 | 14
It depends... If they remove the two Vaxes, they dont need the cluster, and then no alias is available. If they keep the Alpha as a single node cluster, they could enter the alias in lmhosts, but I will advise AGAINST it. So use the nodename, it will serve you best in troubleshooting situations.
