4166.0. "NT fails connecting to PW Server using DNS Name resolution only" by NETRIX::"[email protected]" (Robert Milberger) Fri Feb 21 1997 04:51
Hello,
We have encountered a problem when trying to connect a NT WS
to a Pathworks VMS 5.0e Server when using DNS Name resolution.
Setup of Testnetwork:
PW Server 5.0E
DNS Server UCX 4.1-ECO04
with Cluster and Metric Server
|
|
---------------------------------------------------------
|
|
NT WS 4.0 SP2
Pw VMS Server:
IP: 16.187.32.96 / 255.255.255.0
NT WS:
IP: 16.187.128.55 / 255.255.255.0
The protocol used is only TCPIP. On NT WS there is NO lmhosts,Wins, ...
I have traced down this a little and found out that with WIn95 or
WFW 311/MSTCP 3.11B this works without any problems.
The Clients starts first with 3 broadcasts in its Subnet, then asks the
DNS Server, get an answer, and after that directly connect to the Pw share.
With NT its a little bit different:
NT also tries first 3 broadcasts in its Subnet, then ask the Name Server,
get an answer, but then asks again for a Netbios Name query *<00...(15)>
(see the traces below)
To this name query the Pathworks Server never responds and the connection
timed out.
The same connect to another NT Server works, because the NT Server answers
to the Netbios Name query *<00...(15)>.
thanks for any suggestions,
Robert
ps:
Here are the traces:

| Find out the name that NT queries for. It probably searches
for all names starting with * in an nbstatus request.
We don't support *SMBserver yet, V6 will.

4166.2 | it works in same subnet and with lmhosts file ... | NETRIX::"[email protected]" | Robert Milberger | Mon Feb 24 1997 05:49 | 344 |
| Hi Adrie,
I have a full trace from a NT WS quering a NT Server with
DNS Netbios Name resolution from another subnet.
These are only the frames appearing after successful DNS resolution,
quering for *<00...15> .
What I cannot understand is, that if both machines (NT WS and
Pathworks VMS Server) are in the same subnet then it is working.
It also works if using the lmhosts file for the cluster members.
(what I cannot use for the cluster alias, because it get its
ip address dynamically)
So if it works when client and server are in the same subnet
or with lmhosts file, then it can not be a problem of an *SMBServer
request??
Can you please have a look at the trace, is this what you mean?
thanks a lot for investigating,
robert
