Pathworks VMS V5.XX Windows for Workgroup v3.11 client This is a licensing issue. The question is does the Pathworks server allow connection to shares from non licensed WFWG v3.11 clients for a predetermined number of clients and period? I have a customer who has 4 WFWG clients without any client licenses and no server based licenses and yet they can connect to the shares on the Pathworks V5 server. We used the Admin/Anal utility to view event log entries and saw following message: ..... Event: client without Pathworks V5.0 license allowed access Event source: LAN Manager Server Event Class: Warning The customer problem is that uptil recently all the 4 WFWG clients could connect ok but recently only 3 of them can still connect at the same time. Customer appreciates that he does need pathworks license for clients and does have the PAKs, but he would like to understand how the above is possible. Thanks in advance for any feedbacks. Cass Simeon, UK PCI Support.

re: .0 It has been standard, though not widely documented, policy to allow clients with a pre-V5.0 license to access V5.0 servers for limited access. The "limit" does not apply to numbers of clients or length of time, but simply to the features that they can use. These clients are *not* allowed to use any of the features of a LAN Manager server that were not present in our V4.0 MS-Net servers. So, for example, a client with a pre-V5.0 license could not Browse. "But", you say, "pre-V5.0 clients didn't use PAKs! How does the server know if the client accessing the server is client with a valid pre-V5.0 client or one without a license at all?" The answer is, we don't. (Except that we *don't* assume a Windows NT client has migrated from a PATHWORKS V4.x client, so Windows NT clients all must have a license.) Please note that this ambiguous grey area will be eliminated with the release of the V6.0 server. Unlicensed client access will not be permitted and only the V6.0 client access license will be valid.
