5856.0. "Disable a LOGIN_SHELL window" by 21272::MOREY (Life, adventure without survivors) Mon May 26 1997 16:02

    	Hi,

    	I have a customer using DECwindows 1.2-4 on a VXT 2000 with OpenVMS
    6.2. His Username/Password Login Window is inside of another window,
    this window has a label "login_shell". He wants to disable this external
    window (Login_shell). Does anybody know how to do it???

    	Thanks in advance,

That's interesting. It sounds like the local window manager on the
VXT2000 is putting a border around the login box, but it shouldn't be
doing this if the login box is created with overrideRedirect. Is this
with the New Desktop (CDE) or the (old) DECwindows desktop? The New
Desktop is the default on Alpha.

I'm pretty sure the DECwindows login box is created with overrideRedirect,
but maybe the CDE login box isn't. On a workstation it doesn't matter
because there usually isn't a window manager running when the login box is
up, but on an X terminal it does matter.

I suggest entering an IPMT case.

5856.2yes, I agree with the local wm theory...ZUR01::JAUNINwww2000: click and dispairThu May 29 1997 06:5325
First of all I'm not the author of .0 I just have some experiences, which might
probably help...and condirm bob's explanations in .1 ...

     >>On a workstation it doesn't matter

Yes, and on eXcursion ("Multiple Window" mode / a local (ms-like) wm or mwm is
running) you also get the loginbox inside a window if launching the CDE loginbox
from VMS (AXP Motif 1.2-4) or DECunix (V.?), from a HP machine (V.?) or a SUN
Sparcstation (V.?)...

I don't get the loginbox inside a window when launching it from VAX VMS (no
CDE)...

CDE is not able to run in eXcursions "Multiple Window" mode so you have to
switch to "Single Window" mode and then you don't have this behaviour, because
no local window manager is running and the loginbox apears without border in
your "eXcursion root window"...

  So it seems to be a general CDE design bug/expected behaviour which just
  matters on *real" Xterminals like our VXT2000 which is by the way EOL...

5856.3don't close this windowMUNICH::AUEROCHSStephan Auerochs, CSC MunichFri May 30 1997 06:438
This will be a problem, if you close the login_shell-window via windowmenu or
ALT-F4. The keyboardfocus is lost (I suppose it remains on the now unavailable
loginbox), the processes DTLOGIN and DTGREET keep running on the server.
To continue work you have to reset your VXT2000 via TerminalManager or stop the
DT-processes.
In my opinion it is an unpleasant design bug, not an expected behaviour.

5856.4There's nothing to do ???21272::MOREYLife, adventure without survivorsMon Jun 02 1997 14:2515

    	Hi,

    	Yep. We're using the CDE (DECwindows MOTIF 1.2-4) and we shouldn't
    close the login shell window, because the login box will disappear. We
    do this, we have to reset the VXT 2000.

    	So, I'm assuming that is a bug and there's nothing to do or
    configure. Or I'll open an IPMT or wait for a new release. Am I
    correct???

    	Best Regards,

Yes, I'd say go ahead and open an IPMT case.
