5827.0. "Errors with CDAViewer of CDE, Motif 1.2-4, VMS" by MLNCSC::BORGINI () Thu Apr 17 1997 03:26

Hi folks,
        an important customer of mine reports some problems about the use
        of CDAViewer in CDE environment.

He works on an Alphaserver 1000A 4/266 with 128Mb of memory, last firmware
release, OpenVMS 6.2-1H3, Motif 1.2-4 with CDE, patch ALPMOTF01_U4012
already installed.
We have reproduced the customer problems on our Alphastation 255 with same
software products and versions.
STARS/Notes don't report these problems.

1) Reading with CDAViewer the firmware update release notes V3.7, exactly
the file ALPHA_V37_FW_UPD.PS on our last cd-rom (but you can see this
problem with same file of version 3.8), you see on the display
first an empty sheet, then when you scroll down with the arrow key the
following error appears:

    This job requires more memory then is available in this printer.
    Try one or more of the following and then print again:
    in the PS dialog box click optimize for portability;
    in the device option dialog box make sure the available printer memory is
    accurate;
    reviews the number of fonts in the document;
    print the document in parts.

But he didn't print it, he wants only to see these documents!
He affirms this problem appears also with other files.PS of our cd-rom.

2) Always with CDAViewer, reading the installation guide.PS of VAXELN 4.6,
on our cd-rom from layered OpenVMS Alpha March '97 products, clicking
on forward/reverse keys appears the error:

        Formatting error (and clicking in the Diagnostic input file):
        %%[Error: undefined: OffendingCommand:DVC$PSJob ]%%

other times you can see other types of Formatting error, like:
        limit check, or invalid access, or no current point.
Often these errors are associated to an address, containing some lines with
many characters **** (maybe Postscript refuses the asterisks....).
This problem appears also with the file: SYS$HELP:HELPDEBUGGER.PS and
some files on cd-rom, like DEC OSF/1 Guide to real time programming.PS
(code AA-PS33C-TE) and Guide to DECThreads July '94.
All these files, however, has been printed correctly on Postscript queues
using DCPS.

3)Using again CDAViewer, reading the file SYS$HELP:Open3Dreleasenotes.PS
and using forward/reverse keys speedily to pass to a desired page, sometimes
the display stays "dirty" with characters from the previous displayed page,
and it is necessary to exit from this file.

4)If CDAViewer loads figures originated GIF or JPEG, then doing a printscreen
of the full screen with many windows displayed, will appear problems in the
display; this occurs with long files loaded from Internet (i.e files of
22000 blocks).
These files captured by XV are good, then also CDAViewer sees them correctly
if they are translated from GIF to PS, and they are also good using Mosaic.

5)Using the X-utility (or DECWindows applications) Image Viewer, loading
files with format GIF or JPEG containing many photos, often these last
are aborted with the message:

       viewer message pop-up access violation

These files have been loaded from Internet and they haven't problem
displayed with Mosaic.

6)Using the X-utility Xpr, it asks for an input file, then clicking on
O.K. starts the "little clock"; it seems to work, but at the end it doesn't
produce anything in the SYS$PRINT queue or in other queues.
Moreover it is strange that Xpr doesn't ask for what is the destination
queue, which format to use and so on.
Here is to take notice of Xwd and Xwu utilities function correctly, and
they are tied to Xpr.
Moreover, all these utilities function correctly if used in CDE environment
with Motif and DEC UNIX.

Thanks in advance for any possible suggestions, also about a little of
these problems.
Regards,
       Roberto.

For problem 1 it sounds like either CDA Viewer or the server is running
out of memory. Are there any error messages in the sys$manager:
decw$server_0_error.log file, or in the CDA Viewer's sys$output? To see
the sys$output from the CDA Viewer process, go into the Session Manager's
Work In Progress dialog box from the Session menu, select CDA Viewer in
the process list box and click on Show Output.

Apart from that I'd suggest reporting these problems through IPMT. I'm
not sure whether they're problems with the viewer or with the DPS
extension. Please enter a separate IPMT report for each problem.
