I'm not able to get the CDE login box after a normal boot. I get a black
screen. I only access this Station using the systartup_vms.com below:
$ ty systartup_vms.com
$ on error then continue
$ sysmanio = "$sysman io"
$ define /system/exec sys$sylogin sys$manager:sylogin
$ start/queue/manager
$ start/queue sys$batch
$ define decw$ignore_decnet true
$ define decw$ignore_decwindows true
$ @sys$manager:startnet
$ exit
After this boot I start the Motif and again get a Black screen in the console.
If you check all the informations I have below, you'll see that I have the
DECW$SERVER, DTLOGIN and DTGREET process created, I'm able to set a display
(DECnet) and run the ICO example (nothing happens in the console), I have a
empty DECW$LOGIN.LOG file and the DECW$SERVER_0_ERROR.LOG file without error.
I already checked sysgen parameter, licenses, softwares and other stuffs,
and I didn't see an obvious problem (I think so!). My main doubt is if
is correctly installed and exactly what I need to get an Alphastation 255/300
with Motif working properly.
It's a FIS equipment and since the customer got and installed it the problem
exist.
If you have any suggestion about tests or procedures to troubleshooting what
is going on, will be very welcome.
I posted this notes in the OPEN3D and ALPHASTATION conference.
Thanks, Mauro.

| DECwindows doesn't start after a normal boot because you're defining
decw$ignore_decwindows in systartup_vms.com. What happens if you remove
that logical name definition and reboot the system?
The other thing I'd be interested in knowing is if you get any error
messages displayed if you start DECwindows using "@SYS$MANAGER:DECW$STARTUP"
instead of "@SYS$MANAGER:DECW$STARTUP RESTART".

5807.2 | DECW$STARTUP without RESTART... | VAXRIO::MAURO | | Wed Mar 19 1997 07:16 | 26 |
| Perhaps I didn't explain very weel what is going on. The systartup_vms
you saw in .0, was created for us to make the system bootable. The idea
is don't start the decwindows in the boot, since when we try it with
original systartup_vms that comes with VMS the boot stops with a black
screen.
After the boot with the decw$ignore_decwindows defined the idea was to
start decwindows manualy. I tried the DECW$STARTUP without RESTART and:
$ @sys$startup:decw$startup
Number of screens: 1
Screen devices and order: GYA0
%RUN-S-PROC_ID, identification of created process is 0000011F
0000011F DECW$SERVER_0 HIB 8 684 0 00:00:01.60 669

00000120 DTLOGIN LEF 4 117 0 00:00:00.24 237
280
00000121 DTGREET LEF 5 198 0 00:00:01.68 471
510 S
The situation in the console is still the same, black screen. I create
a WSAX and run ICO and it seems ok, since with ^T I can check IO being
increased.
Regards, Mauro.

5807.3 | | GRIM::MESSENGER | Bob Messenger | Wed Mar 19 1997 16:14 | 12 |
| There is a known problem on Alpha systems where shareable images don't get
installed correctly if you start DECwindows after the system has booted
instead of in systartup_vms.com, due to GH_RSRVPGCNT being too low (it
gets artifically boosted during system startup). This doesn't seem to be
happening in your case.
Your problem is pretty strange since everything seems to be running
correctly and yet you don't see anything on the screen. Could it be a
hardware problem, e.g. a bad graphics card? I assume that text is
displayed normally on the workstation screen during system startup.

5807.4 | Hw? I also suspected about that... | VAXRIO::MAURO | | Thu Mar 20 1997 06:55 | 13 |
| Bob,
during the boot the messages are displayed all right. If after I got
the black screen I type ^F2 the console mode comes in a blue screen,
white letters and seems work pretty fine. I already checked the graphic
device (PBXGB-AA) and video (PCXBV-YY) part numbers in the option list
from November 1996 and both seems to be supported.
Right now, because of the customer pressure, I opened a call in
Colorado. I don't where you are or even if you are from DEC or EDS, but
if I get some news I'll update this note.
Thanks, Mauro Aquino.

| Mauro,
> I don't where you are or even if you are from DEC or EDS,
I'm at ZKO in Nashua, N.H. Until this month I worked in the Workstation
Software Group (a.k.a. the DECwindows group). I turned down a job offer
from EDS, and now I'm upstairs in the VMS group supporting graphics
drivers and DDXs (device-dependent X servers).
I hope the folks in Colorado can figure this one out.

I recently worked on an AlphaStation 255/300 FIS OpenVMS Alpha V6.2-1H3
and DECwindows Motif V1.2-4 (CDE), and found the version of the TGA2
(PowerStorm 3D30; PBXGB-AA) driver was somewhat out of date, and that
the DECwindows Motif patch kit had not been applied. See 5760.* for
some of the CDE adventures I've had, including some references to the
TGA2 need for the Open3D kit, etc. (The AlphaStation box in question
was subsequently upgraded to V7.1, and is presently running fine...
Under MWM, though.)
