5802.0. "Rewrite decwindows application ??" by QCAV02::KPREM () Wed Mar 12 1997 23:20

Hello,

One of our customer has a VAX system running VMS 5.5. His application is
PASCAL calling Plot Ten routines. He had graphic stations from Tektronix
connected to his system. He wants to upgrade them now to X Terminals. This
means that he would have to re-write his software to include X protocols and
routines to work with X which he has already planned for. My questions are :
Does Digital have a software to include or convert his application - PASCAL
to work in an X environment? Generally PASCAL comes with it's own Windows
Manager which does this job. It is common knowledge that OLWM for PASCAL on
the VMS platform is a Digital product. Can this product do the job? If not
which is the other software capable of doing so? Our X Terminals system can
connect to any platform and OS as long as the applications have X protocols
and routines built-in. It can connect to a DEC with VMS or a VAX with VMS to
be precise.

I had posted this in the PASCAL notes file. They suggested that I cld
get a proper repy in this notes file since it is a decwindows related
issue.

Any solution to this problem ??

Tks n regards,

Prem

DECwindows Motif does provide PASCAL language bindings, so you're O.K.
there. I don't know if rewriting their application to make direct Xlib
calls is the right solution for your customer, though. What will happen
in a few years when they want to migrate to another platform such as
Windows NT? With DECwindows Motif now in maintenance mode I think you're
right to look around for an existing product that will give your customer
more flexibility.

What kind of Tektronix graphic stations is your customer currently using?
Digital used to provide a Tektronix 4125 emulator ("Tekterm") for
DECwindows. I don't see it listed on the latest Software Products Library
(previously known as CONDIST), though, so it may have been retired.

I haven't heard of OLWM for PASCAL, unfortunately, and I'm not familiar
with plotting sortware in general so I can't help you there.
