5792.0. "AS2000/ATI Mach64/OpenVMS V7.1/DW V1.2-4 = Problem!" by DAVIDF::FOX (David B. Fox -- DTN 285-2091) Tue Mar 04 1997 16:07

If you are trying to get DECwindows V1.2-4 to work on OpenVMS Alpha
V7.1 with the ATI Mach64 card (PB2GA-FB), read on...
If you have used the ECU to set the adapter for generic VGA then you're
ok and DECwindows should start without any difficulty.
If on the other hand you have used the ECU to set the adapter to be a
Mach64 (ECU V1.9 or later) then you'll need to do the following. Upon
startup, DECwindows probably has said that there is no graphics device
present.
With Fred Kleinsorge from OpenVMS' help, we figured out the problem.
My system is an Alphaserver 2000 4/275. You'll need to confirm the
following with your system.
1) Do an $ ANALYZE/SYSTEM and then SDA> CLUE CONFIG. Find the section
for the EISA bus. It should look something like this:
3 EISA 80D4D6C0 0 EISA
80D4D898 0 System Board
80D4D8D0 IRA: 1 Proteon Token
Ring (PRO6002)
80D4D908 ERA: 2 DEC4250
80D4D940 3 00303034.36415349
80D4D978 ERB: 4 DEC4250
My Mach64 is in EISA slot 3.
2) Edit DECW$AUTOCONFIG.DAT in SYS$MANAGER: and add the following
block of code:
device = "EISA Mach64" ! EISA MAch64
name = GQ ! Device name
driver = sys$gqddriver ! Driver name
adapter = eisa ! Adapter
id = 0x36415349 0x00303034
flags = novector ! Load /NOVECTOR
units = 1 ! Single unit controller
end_device ! Cause the entry to be added
You can put this block of code anywhere in the file. DON'T put
it in the middle of another device block though! :-)
Notice that the ID field has the numbers from the CLUE CONFIG
listing *REVERSED!* This is not a mistake.
3) Exit the editor and you can test this modification with
$ MCR SYSMAN IO AUTO
Your screen should go from the default dumb terminal blue screen
to the OpenVMS operator screen.
If you do a $ SHOW DEVICE G you should now see a Gxxx device.
4) Start DECwindows by typing:
$ @SYS$STARTUP:DECW$STARTUP
You'll be all set from here!
Good luck!
