5788.0. "DECwindows doesn't start up; DECW$SERVER_0 hangs in
LEF" by LNZALI::BACHNER (Mouse not found. Click OK to continue) Thu Feb 27 1997 13:48
A customer got a brand new AlphaStation 255 with an ZLXp-E1 graphic card and
FISed OpenVMS. The software versions are:
OpenVMS V6.2-1H3
Motif V1.2-4
Open3D V3.5
Licenses for OpenVMS, Open3D, and NAS 150 (therefore for Motif) are active.
When he boots the workstation he doesn't get the DECwindows login screen. There
is an X-shaped, black mouse cursor which can only be seen when pushed across
text (which is still there from system startup).
He can login at the console (OPA0:), and finds that the DECW$SERVER_0 process is
in LEF state. The DECW$SERVER_0_ERROR.LOG file is created, but empty (size
used/allocated is 0/0). Invoking @DECW$STARTUP RESTART doesn't help.
Any idea what could cause this behaviour ?
Thanks for your help,
Hans.
