| Because DECwindows Motif is in maintenance mode, it's very unlikely that
Digital will ever provide Motif 2.0 on OpenVMS.
If you want a more definitive answer than that, I suggest sending mail to
the product manager, Vittorio STAR::Mezzano.

I've heard a rumor that X11 Consortium is falling apart and that X11R6 or
R7 may be the last release for *all* platforms. Is this true? Perhaps
this is simply an acknowledgement that Wintel has succeeded as the
universal desktop.

5787.3 | X Consortium is gone, but work continues | DECWIN::MCCARTNEY | | Tue Mar 04 1997 16:33 | 10 |
| The X Consortium disbanded as of December 31, 1996. All of the X code has
been given to the Open Group for further development and maintenance. The
Open Group has formed an X Group (both engineers and interested members
outside). They currently have surveys out to member companies asking for
priorities on the work items they have. This includes both new development
and maintenance. If you are interested in being on the mailing lists, contact
Brian Bobryk ([email protected] or quarry::bgb). He is our Open Group rep
for X, Motif and CDE.

Was there ever issued a formal statement to the press on the disband of the
X Consortium? Or is this simply a quiet fade away into obscurity?

| There was a formal announcement that came out to the press. There were also
many messages that went to the consortium's distribution lists regarding this.
Since December, there have also been several messages that came out from
the Open Group regarding the formation of the X project team and the
directions that team will take.
I can't find the press release (must have deleted it in a major clean up
recently), but I do have the stuff from the Open Group if you want to see it.
