I'm having a problem with DECWindows on a customers console, they are using a VGA type monitor as the console on an ALPHAServer 1000. Sometimes when they return from the weekend the DECWindows display has nothing but the mouse pointer showing (no DECWindows display), you can type control F2 and see the console messages from bootup, but that's it. We can reboot to fix the problem, but that's not always an option. I also replaced the Compaq Qvision video card, but we still have the problem. 1) Is this a known problem, with a fix ? 2) Could we restart DECWindows to get the console back, rather than a reboot ? 3) Any other suggestions welcomed. They are running OpenVMS Ver. 6.2, not sure of the version of DECWindows, how can I tell. I can see the OPCOM process along with another called DECW$SERVER_0 they both are in the HIB state. One other thing to consider is that the customer is using RAXCO PerfectCashe and PerfectDisk. Thanks, Mike

It sounds like the DECwindows client crashed and the server continued to run. When they leave their system over the weekend is it logged into someone's account or is it just displaying the login box. If it's logged into someone's account, please post the file SYS$LOGIN:DECW$SM.LOG as a reply to this note. Also, please post SYS$MANAGER:DECW$SERVER_0_ERROR.LOG. > 1) Is this a known problem, with a fix ? Not that I know of. It's possible that their Session Manager or DECW$LOGIN process is getting killed because it exceeds its CPU limit or that it's being stopped by an idle process killer. > 2) Could we restart DECWindows to get the console back, rather than > a reboot ? It's certainly worth trying, although you might have trouble restarting DECwindows depending on which version of DECwindows Motif you're running. If "@sys$manager:decw$startup restart" doesn't work try "@sys$manager:decw$startup apps" since the server is still running. > They are running OpenVMS Ver. 6.2, not sure of the version of > DECWindows, how can I tell. Use this command: @sys$update:decw$versions. Please post the output as a reply to this note. -- Bob

Bob, Thanks for your interest in my problem. I gathered the info you asked for and will post in the next 3 replies. Also the customer said they log-out the terminal before leaving for the night or weekend. Mike

Bob, I'm having a problem posting these files into notes. I can type them out and they look fine, but when I do a "reply file-spec" it shows up as garbage. Do you have any ideas ? I could mail them to you also. Mike

Try mailing them to me if you can't post them in the notes conference. I'm not sure why they'd show up as garbage. -- Bob
