199.5 | More detail on POLYCENTER HSM-DUNIX | DECWET::HUBER | | Thu Jan 23 1997 21:54 | 32 |
| POLYCENTER Hierarchical Storage Manager (HSM) Solution for Digital UNIX,
Version 1.2A, was approved for EOL (End-of-Life) on October 30, 1996,
by Storage PM&D Review. Acting on this, the product was put into
Maintenance Mode on DSPS effective 6-Jan-97. The product is still
orderable until 6-Jan-98 and still shippable until 6-Apr-97.
Working with the Digital UNIX / AdvFS group since early 1996, we came to the
mutual conclusion that it no longer made good business sense to continue
support for the current HSM in newer revisions of the Operating System. Thus,
the current HSM product is not supported in Digital UNIX 4.0, and support is
not currently planned for any subsequent version.
A different product, based on the HSM module for NetWorker from Legato, is
currently under porting-development. The NetWorker HSM product will be
supported on Digital UNIX 4.0 forward.
I strongly urge you to obtain a copy of the product-migration presentation,
which may be found in the public directory:
msgaxp::marketing:[public.stormgmt]hsmunix.ppt
This MS Powerpoint file goes into some detail about the rationale for our
change in product direction, and the differences between the two products
(POLYCENTER HSM and NetWorker HSM). Let me know if you have any difficulty
obtaining the file and viewing/printing it -- if you cannot access it, I can
mail a .ppt file to you personally.
After viewing that presentation, if you still have questions/concerns, please
either post them here, or e-mail me directly at DECWET::HUBER.
Regards,
Craig Huber

199.6 | Minor error in .5 | DECWET::HUBER | | Fri Jan 24 1997 09:05 | 5 |
| The shippable-until date should read 6-Apr-98,
*not* 6-Apr-97 as was mistakenly posted in
Note 199.5. Sorry if this caused any confusion.

199.7 | One more question | DEKITG::JUNGYOUNGNAM | Angelo Nam - hidden village! | Sun Jan 26 1997 17:37 | 7 |
| What is current solution for use RW524 jukebox under DUNIX V4.0?
Under DUNIX 3.2C or after, we can use it with SCSI CAM driver and
HSM 1.2a, is there any temporary work around for DUNIX V4.0?
Do we have to wait until April 1998?
Thnaks in advance,
Angelo

| Angelo --
Right now, the plan is for HSM customers to stay at v3.2x of Digital Unix
until NetWorker HSM is ready. Note 25.1 in the DECWET::NETWORKER conference
says NetWorker HSM is intended to ship in Q4 '97.

199.9 | Use of RW524 jukebox with HSM | DECWET::HUBER | | Thu Jan 30 1997 17:36 | 14 |
| Angelo,
Support for the RW524 on HSM will come under DUNIX V4.0+
with the NetWorker HSM release. This release will also
include an update to the NSR server, and will be called
V4.2C. It is currently scheduled to ship on the April 1997
LPCD. Of course, if you are currently running POLY-HSM on
DUNIX 3.2C+, this would require both an HSM product migration
(POLY-HSM to NetWorker HSM) and an O/S migration (DUNIX 3.2C+
to DUNIX 4.0+).
Does this answer your questions? If not, please post.

| Angelo --
Just a caution on going from Polycenter HSM to NetWorker HSM:
The format of data on the optical platters is completely different
for Polycenter HSM and NetWorker HSM. So NetWorker HSM will not
be able to just start using the same platters.

199.11 | POLY HMS to NetWorker HSM product migration | DECWET::HUBER | | Fri Jan 31 1997 09:17 | 17 |
| Angelo,
You may find more detail on this product migration
if you go to the .ppt presentation referenced in
decwet::networker, Note 25.1. In particular, look
at Slides 15, 16, and 22.
Additionally, ZSO Engineering will be writing a
paper describing the steps required to create a
migration script, with examples. The paper could
be e-mailed to customers considering the
conversion. It should be available later in
Q3FY97, before the NetWorker HSM is shipping.
Regards,
Craig
