7381.0. "Netbeui, TCP/IP and License Agent" by MDR01::LIDIA (MCS Madrid) Wed Apr 09 1997 12:17

    Hi

A customer finds the following problem.

    Configuration:

Pathworks for VMS v5.0E in a cluster

    Pathworks for Win95 v1.0A in pc's
TCP/IP protocol running in some pc's.
TCP/IP and Netbeui protocols in another pc's.

From several days ago some of these pc's receive the error message:

"The password you specified is incorrect or your account is inactive"

The screen reads the error message when they are loading the Licensing
Agent. They cannot connect to any shared service.

All of the pc's with the error run TCP/IP some of them also Netbeui. The
customer loaded Netbeui again in some of them and added the line
PWRK$Lnode to LMHOSTS file (With #PRE and #DOM prefix) . And these pc's
now work fine. But they don't want to load Netbeui. Then,

-They don't understand why it's necessary LMHOSTS file in the same
    domain.

-If they unload Netbeui, is it possible the License Agent broke again?

-Please, are there any alternative workaround or fix? This is not valid
    for the customer.

Thanks in advance for your help,

PATHWORKS Licensing has nothing to do with Microsoft domain
login, accounts or passwords. A licensing problem usualy
appears first as messages in the PATHWORKS event log and then
as "Network responded incorrectly" error when connecting to
file or print services on a PATHWORKS server.
7381.2Protocol problemTARUGO::LIDIAThu Apr 10 1997 11:1119
    Hi,

I think that whatever problem about the protocol produces a symptom
over License Agent because it's the first program runs trying to
connect to the server, isn't it?

Yes, I agree with you this isn't a licensing problem. I think this is a
problem with TCP/IP, NETBIOS maybe...But we're very confuse: PING and
TELNET work fine and the problem seems to fix when they load NETBEUI
    again.

    Please, any idea?

Thanks in advance for your prompt reply,

I assume they "log in to the network" (enter their username
and password) when they start Windows 95. Do they wait until
the license requester is done before they log in? If not,
have them try that to see if the symptoms change.

    Hi,

First of all, they run license requester, the screen reads the error
message and they log in to the domain. Afterwards, they receive several
error message, one message by connection to shared file or print
service rejected. But, they can connect to some service, they never
    can connect to print services.

At PWRK$LICENSE_MANAGER they have enabled "FAILED LICENSE REQUEST"
tem, but the pc's failing don't appear in the PWRK$LICENSE_SERVER.LOG.
    I don't understand this.

    Another tracks:

-While they used PATHWORKS for VMS v 5.0Deco* they never found
these problems. Now they are using v5.0E.

-Default transport in all pc's is set to TCP/IP. But when they install
Netbeui and it works, Netbeui is on LANA 0. Isn't it? Then, the license
is requesting via Netbeui when it works fine.

    	Any idea?

Thanks in advance for your replies,

    same domain? or same subnet?
I would expect it to be needed (or WINS used) if they're in a different
subnet, though a decent percentage of folks don't know how to tell if
they're in the same subnet or not :-}.

Sounds like it might be a server problem. You may want
to ask about PWOV V5.0E problems in NOTED::PWV50IFT.
