7361.0. "?? on Multicast addresses and PW TCP/IP" by ALFSS2::OLSEN_G (Hey y'all, how y'all doin'?) Wed Mar 12 1997 17:32

Quick Question: Is there anything that has to be configured for PW
tcp/ip to accept multicast addresses? PWTCP.INI? maybe even
    protocol.ini?

My customer is installing a RealAudio Server on NT and has several NT
and Pathworks v5.1 clients on the same subnet/wire. The server sends
data out over tcp/ip sockets, UDP ports and via Multicast address - he
sets this up as a class D address.

The Audio data is accepted at the NT machines in all 3 cases. On the PW
clients, the tcp/ip sockets are fine, UDP is flaky but usually works,
but the multicast address fails - PW Clients never get data sent on the
    multicast address.

In researching this, it seems that the class D addresses
224.0.0.0 - 239.255.255.255 are multicast ip addresses and it appears
that the client must either have some extension to recognize these
addresses or have a way to recognize the multicast address being used.

Obviously in this case, NT does it. Does Pathworks' TCP/IP support
this? If so, what do we have to do to get it to work?

    Thanks in advance,

    Gary

One way to check to see if a particular TCP/IP implementation supports the
multicast extensions is to get a sniffer trace of the system starting up.
If it sends a datagram to the IP address 224.0.0.1 then it supports multicast.

See:

	http://www.sockets.com/ch16.htm

"When a TCP/IP host starts, it sends a host membership report to
the all-hosts group (224.0.0.1) from each network interfaces to
notify the multicast routers. Every host remains a member of the
all-hosts group for as long as the host is active."

    John,

I'll try the trace, but can you tell me if the Pathworks v5.1 TCP/IP
    supports multicasts?

    Thanks,

If I knew I would have told you. I suspect not.

Ok - I'll run the trace and see.

    Thanks,
