1031.1 | Syncing Disks | NETRIX::"[email protected]" | Howard | Wed Apr 02 1997 03:12 | 11 |
| Sorry about the goof of 1031. However, I have a customer with an 8400 running
3.2g. He experienced several crashes and noticed inconsistencies when the
syncing disks messages were displayed. In several cases, he got "syncing
disks... done",
"syncing disks...", and "syncing disks... failed". His primary concern is
with
the integrity of his ADVFS filesystems when he gets nothing but the "syncing
disks" or "syncing disks... failed" messages..
Any clues?? He has installed the OSF375-055 patch..

| The failure to sync the disks could be due to corruption of some data
structures required to sync the outstanding bufs, device problems, or
driver resource shortages.
Unless the "done" message is output, it is possible that not all dirty
buffers have been written to disk.
When you saw the "syncing disks... " without the "done" or "failed", did
the system hang, or did you get a dump? It might be useful to analyze a
dump for one of these panic's.

| Thanks for your reply Larry. The customer did state that he did get dumps and
were forwarding them to us. To date, I have not received them. I'll ask him
to
expedite sending them. Do you have a system that I can copy them to?

| howard,
Please enter a QAR or CLD, whichever is appropriate for your customer.
If you enter a QAR, please place the vmcore, vmunix, and /var/adm/messages
file in guru:/crash/files (or guru:/vlm/files if /crash/files is full).
If you enter a CLD, just follow the instructions in the CLD form to
provide the necessary information.
Please specify in the QAR or CLD if the customer wishes resolution on the
panic, or wants some analysis on the system disk sync operation (.1).
