4723.0. "Problems accessing high density disks" by FORTY2::FOOTE () Fri Apr 04 1997 04:59

Here's a strange problem! A friend of mine is running Windows 3.1, and is
unable to use high density disks. Whenever you try to read a 1.44Mb disk
Windows reports "Invalid format disk", however, a 720K disk can be read fine.
The problem extends to DOS when you shutdown Windows - trying to access a
1.44Mb disk there results in a general failure error, but again, 720K disks
work ok.

There's nothing wrong with the drive, as we tried booting from a 1.44Mb disk
which worked fine, and we also successfully accessed a 1.44Mb disk in DOS
before running Windows - so I can only assume that there must be something
wrong with the Windows configuration.

Has anybody seen this before, or have any ideas where to look?

Thanks,

Chris

Try starting windows with WIN /S and see if it works with
the standard mode drivers.

This could be a bad driver or a BIOS problem.

WIN 3.1 skills are aging out,

Thanks Chuck, I'll get him to try this - unfortunately he was rushed into
hospital yesterday, so it could be a while.

Some one in the group has a box of diskettes pn# 00-rx26k-01, double sided, 4.0
mb extra density.... I attempted a format but it failed. It said to check for
damage write lock etc.... Is it because of the drive on my system is only
rated for 1.44 capacity or are they for another type of system??? I have a 486
