4722.0. "SoundBlasterPro-Problem: System hanging" by COL01::SPIEGELBERG (Elmar S. - D1-OSS Cologne) Mon Mar 17 1997 10:18
I have a problem on my 486/DX2 pc at home with the Sound Blaster Pro
sound card.
Windows 3.1 or WfW 3.11
DOS 6.22
Sound Blaster Pro with factory settings Adr 220H, IRQ5, DMA1
Installation for all components was ok. Testprogram for sound blaster
works fine. Windows sounds at startup etc. work, most games with
sound work but: there is a problem when playing with the MOSAIC
game from creative labs (included in the package). After some (1-20)
steps within this game the system stops working and is just hanging
around. I have to push the RESET or POWER button and startup the
system again.
What happens? Every step in MOSAIC is performing a simple "plong"
noise during screen update. For those who don't know MOSAIC: it's
a very easy and simple program with minimum of screen update, minimum
of cpu processing, no disk I/O etc. - really simple.
When I switch off the sound, I can play that game to death with no
hanging system. So it definitely has to to with the sound card.
As far as I know, there are no conflicting IRQs, DMA channels etc.
since there is no further hardware in that pc. I SCANDISKed the
drive including surface test, I reinstalled DOS, Windows, WfW, the
drivers, newer drivers coming from the WEB: without success.
Does anyone know this problem or does anyone have any hints on
this problem?
Thanks for any help.

4722.1 | Maybe DMA channel | MIPSBX::"[email protected]" | Th FAIDHERBE | Mon Apr 14 1997 11:49 | 23 |
| Hello,
I think that I have already have that kind of problem.
Try once to disable High DMA.... If my reminds are ok,
I think that problem appear because these high DMA chanel is
used by otherthing (maybe smartdrive or emm386.exe)
After changing high DMA channel, problem doesn't appear anymore.
Kind Regards,
