Hi My customer has an Alpha DEC 3000 running VMS V6.2 and MOTIF V1.2-4. It has a multiple screen environment (PMAGB-B and PMAGD-AA multiscreen adapters). Even having followed the steps described in Getting Started With the New Desktop Manual, section B.3 Configuring Window Manager for Managing Multiple Screens, customer is not able to open a Decterm on screen 1. It is always opened on screen 0. If the New desktop interface is not being used, the user has an option to choose on which screen to open a Decterm. The customer would like to have this option available on CDE also. Is there anything else that has to be configured? I have no experience with this kind of environment. Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance, Renato.

A new user interface for specifying the screen number for applications started from CDE was added in the ALPMOTF01_U4012 patch kit, which is available through TIMA. See note 5682 in the BULOVA::DECWINDOWS conference for a pointer to the kit on BULOVA. -- Bob

Hi After installing ALPMOTF01_U4012 (thank you Bob), customer has 2 complaints: 1) Using DECwindows interface, when opening a DECterm (for example), customer has the option to choose on which screen it will be started. Using New Desktop, it is necessary to choose the default screen first. 2) Using New Desktop, session 1 is opened by default, and the background on both screens is changed correctly. But when the customer changes to session 2, the background is changed only on screen 0 (screen 1 remains unchanged). Are these normal behavior? Is there any additional setup required? Thanks in advance for any help, Renato.

For question 1, I thought the ALPMOTF01_U4012 kit provided a new tool that let you start an application on whichever screen you specified. I haven't used it myself, though, so I don't know if it will do what you're asking for. For question 2, I don't think the CDE window manager is really set up to handle multiple screens, so it's probably working the way it was designed to work. You could enter an enhancement request as a severity 5 IPMT case although with DECwindows in maintenance mode I wouldn't be too hopeful about the multihead support being redesigned. You'd have to argue that the current behavior is broken, so that this is a bug fix and not new functionality. -- Bob |
