5957.0. "Chip type S3 Vision864 not supported on A200 and VMS V6.2-1H3 and Motif V1.2-4" by SWETSC::LONNGREN () Thu Apr 24 1997 10:24

 The info below is from DECW$SERVER_0_ERROR.LOG after trying to start
 Motif V1.2-4 (CDE) on an Alpha station 200 with VMS V6.2-1H3 and a
 S3 Trio 64 graphical card.

   ...

   s3vmsScreenInit: Chip type S3 Vision864 not supported

   Fatal server error:
   no screens found
   %SYSTEM-F-ABORT, abort

   Unrecoverable server internal error (error code = 44) found, terminating
   all connections.
   ...

 The complete DECW$SERVER_0_ERROR.LOG is enclosed below.

 A SHO CONFIG at the console lists the following graphical controller.

    PCI slot 13 Digital S3 Trio 864 Graphics controller

 There is a label on the card that says PCXAG-AL

 VMS have been upgraded from V6.2 -> V6.2-1H3. When using plain V6.2 the
 system said it couldn't find any graphical controllers. V6.2-1H3 should
 support S3 Trio according to the releasenotes and therefore VMS was
 upgraded from V6.2->V6.2-1H3

 Any Ideas ?

   - Regards Michael

The S3 Trio64 and S3 Vision864 are two different graphics chips. The
Trio64 is supported and the Vision864 is not. It sounds like you have a
Vision864 and not a Trio64.
