Hi My customer is trying to run an application on an HP machine (SPARC 20 running Solaris V2.5.1, SUN OS V5.5.1 and Openwindows V3.5.1) displaying its output on a VAXstation 4000 VLC (running VMS V6.0 and Motif V1.1). After following all the instructions contained in TIMA article entitled "[DEC TCP/IP] Can't Open Display Displaying to VMS System Using TCP/IP", the following message is appearing at the HP terminal: Xlib: client uses different protocol version (11) than server (2816) I would like to know if upgrading Motif to V1.2-3 should solve this problem of if there is anything else involved (an incompatibility, for example). Thanks in advance for your help, Renato.

Are you sure this is an HP machine and not a Sun machine? >Xlib: client uses different protocol version (11) than server (2816) Looks like a byte swapping problem: 11 decimal is 000b hex while 2816 is 0b00 hex. Upgrading to a new version of DECwindows Motif won't do anything because DECwindows Motif is the VMS client, while your problem is with a VMS server and an HP/Sun client. It's the server that's responsible for doing byte swapping, so you should have them install the latest TIMA kit, which is also available on BULOVA: BULOVA::DECW$PUBLIC:[SERVER]VAXDECW01_061.A By the way, I don't think VAX/VMS V6.0 is supported anymore so you should advise the customer to upgrade to a supported version before elevating this as an IPMT case (assuming that installing the patch kit doesn't fix it.) -- Bob |
