After upgrading a A2000 from VMS V6.2 -> V6.2-1H3 ,Motif V1.2-3 complaines about low value of VIRTUALPAGECNT and recommends a new value of 800000 instead of being able to use the old lower value of about 550000. The graphical card is an EISA ATI MACH64-GX that has been working together with VMS V6.2 and the AXPGUP01_062 (installed from the floppy delivered with the card) using the value 550000 of VIRTUALPAGECNT. Since VMS V6.2-1H3 seems to have the ATI MACH64-GX drivers included, (and newer versions) no installation of AXPGUP01_062 is necessary. A value of 550000 seems reasonable but a value of 800000 seems strange. Any ideas why the recommended value is that high, and is it reasonable ? - Regards Michael

I don't know the specific details about why VIRTUALPAGECNT needs to be 800,000 instead of 550,000, but in general the reason you need a high value of VIRTUALPAGECNT with some graphics cards is because of the way the I/O registers are mapped into virtual memory. The DECwindows server process needs to have a very large address space in order to be able to do I/O to the graphics card. -- Bob |
