2229.0. "V2.4A to V2.8A upgrade Advise" by CHEFS::RAVEN () Wed Mar 26 1997 08:56

My name is Kevin Raven and I work in the Command and Control Center in Reading
in the U.K. .

I have been asked to upgrade approx. 100 Systems /Clusters from SLS V2.4A
to the latest version 2.8A (At the moment).

All these nodes are clients and one a server (Tape Database).
85% of the clients runs VMS V6.1 with OSI 6.3 echo 5 the other 15% run under
VMS 5.5-2 DECNET Phase IV.

The Server Tape database at the moment runs under VMS 5.5-2 DECNET Phase IV.

We do not use RDF for any client/server type network backups.

Will a V2.8A client talk to a Database running a V2.4A server VMS 5.5-2 Decnet
IV?

If answer to above yes ...then phased upgrade ...12 machines at a time and last
the server.

If No then Big bang approach and associated risk.

Thanks
Kevin Raven

SLS verions V2.4A and below and V2.5 and above have incompatable volume
databases, specifically in the magazine database. You must upgrade all
client(s) and server(s) at the same time to prevent database corruption
if your using any SLS magazines. If not you can do a rooling upgrade so
long as your goal is to get all clients and servers to V2.8A as soon as
possible.

SLS V2.8A does not yet support DECnet phase 5/OSI/Plus. However, a few
customers have gotten SLS to work on system running phase 5. SLS V2.9,
due out sometime this summer, will support DECnet phase 5/OSI/Plus as
well as OpenVMS V7.0 & 7.1.

Since some of your systems will remain a VMS V5.5-2, be aware that SLS
V2.8A needs the latest version of many of the Run Time Libraries. Use
the AACRT060 kit from the consolidated CDs or VAXACRT09_061 ECO from
DSNLink.

Just one more quick question.....

I'm a little confused....V2.4A supports DECNET Phase V
Well it seems to work on our 80 or so clients running under Open VMS (VAX) V6.1
DECNET OSI V6.3 Echo 5.

In your reply you say that 2.8A does not support Phase V OSI....

Thanks
Kevin

    I believe SLS 2.8A does support OSI. We in CCS specifically upgraded
    to this version to support OSI and it has been working fine.

Sorry for the confussion; SLS V2.8A does support DECnet phase 5(/OSI/Plus) but
only for VMS Versions V6.1 and V6.2. SLS V2.8 and below do not support phase
5, however, some have made it work. SLS V2.9 will support phase 5 on VMS V6.1
through V7.1.

Remember support means Engineering has tested it and the SPD states it is a
supported configuration. This does not mean it can't been done. If someone
is able to make it work then they must support its use.

Sorry to a little dumb here......

Just installing SLS V2.8A on my workstation and I get the banner .....

*                          WARNING                                     *
************************************************************************
*                                                                      *
* SLS V2.8A (client and server) is not compatible with any previous *
* versions of SLS prior to V2.5. If any node in a client-server *
* configuration is running a version later than V2.5, then all *
* nodes in the configuration must be running that same version or *
* higher. An exception can be made if none of the SLS nodes *
*  serve a SLS$MAGAZINE_MASTER_FILE.DAT database.                      *
*                                                                      *
************************************************************************

* Do you want to continue with this installation [No]? yes

We do not use Tape Magazines ....We simply keep Tape details in the database
but not contents on magazines or what tapes are loaded in magazines.

If I upgrade my workstation as a clint and reference a V2.4A server and tape
database, but dont do anything with Magazines ...will all be O.K.
I dont want to corrupt the tapedatabase ...but at the same time I want to avoid ha
having to upgrade all my SLS systems in a one day hit....(100 + systems).

2229.6Some more gotchas on the upgradeGO4GUT::PARSONSPunicenter SupportTue Apr 15 1997 19:1216

    Kevin,

    I wouldn't like to make the call on your question, but having just
    upgraded 28 customer systems last weekend from 2.4A to 2.8A a couple
    of extra potential "gotchas" are:

    1. Make sure 5.5-2 systems have CMA$TIS_SHR.EXE in SYS$LIBRARY. 3 out
       of 4 on the customers system did not, and SLS$TAPMGRRQ dies on
       startup.
    2. On larger Alphas pgflquo may be too small (at 100 000). SLS$TAPMGRRQ
       died with lib-f-insvirmem every time until I increased pgflquo on
       the SLS account to 250 000.

re .5:

As stated, the SLS$MAGAZINE_MASTER_FILE.DAT is the only database
whose format changed between V2.4A thru V2.8A. If your clients
do not use any of the magazine functionality, you are ok.
