2184.0. "Alphasystem , %SYSTEM-VOLINV volume "" , if quickload := 1" by PRSSOS::FONDI () Tue Jan 28 1997 08:02
dear SLS/MDMS Engineering
Last week-end we have upgraded an VAX 7610 runnig VMS 6.2 and SLS 2.8
to an ALPHA 7610.
On this system are connected trough an HSC70 and TC44 two TA90s.
Since the upgrade to Alpha, if cartridge is not inserted in the drive
a restore or an command like
$storage load <device_name> <vol-id> gives the following message
%%%%%%%%%%% OPCOM 25-JAN-1997 13:00:32.36 %%%%%%%%%%%
Request 7, from user SLS on SPLAV3
Assistance required for volume "" on drive _$3$MUA12:
- %SYSTEM-VOLINV, volume is not software enabled
The workaround is to set quickload := 0 in sys$manager:tapestart.com
We have upgraded to SLS 2.8-2-1 with same result.
Question:
---------
When will this be corrected, in the meantime could you post this problem
in the Known Problems and Restrictions for next SLS release if not
included yet or not corrected yet.
(this problem was discover one year ago ,see IPMT CFS.30925 )
thank you,
Henri

2184.1 | Possible tudriver problem | COOKIE::MCCLELLAND | Marty, SLS/MDMS Engineering | Mon Feb 10 1997 08:51 | 26 |

IPMT case CFS.30925 was assigned to VMS engineering. It involved
a TUDRIVER issue fixed in V7.1. It definitely is not an SLS/MDMS
restriction.
Your current problem with the TA90 may or may not be the same problem.
Here is a short synopsis of that problem:
- IO$_PACKACK would return SS$_NORMAL when the drive was empty (i.e.
no media in the drive). This led storage management software to
fail when attempting to read the label of a cartridge because a
volume invalid (VOLINV) error was returned instead of a medium
off-line (MEDOFL) error. The problem was isolated to the Alpha
TUDRIVER only (the VAX version worked well).
If you believe this to be the problem, check with VMS engineering..
there may be a remedial or eco available for versions earlier than
V7.1.
Hope this helps,
Marty

2184.2 | What's the status for this problem | BACHUS::RENTY | | Thu Feb 20 1997 06:00 | 11 |
| We are curently investigating an SLS problem with a new TL810
configuration on an AXP, giving the error message VOLINV, or about the
same symptoms as described in the base note 2184.0.
1. 2184.1 mentions a problem with the TUDRIVER : is there a new
version for this driver ?
2. I couldn't find information about the CLD CFS.30925 : is this the
right IPMT number ?

Hi Bart,
The ipmt case CFS.30925 is an old one. It went to vms eng as a sev 3
case, and as for all sev 3 cases, was auto-closed in ipmt. After closure
it was purged from the ipmt database. Neat system, huh :-). To the
best of my knowledge, the fix never made it into an eco. It was to have
been fixed in 7.1, but I haven't confirmed that myself. Let me see if
I can get some more info from vms engineering.
