2950.0. "GPF when exiting MSWORD, EXCEL?" by NPSS::PARE () Thu Mar 13 1997 09:04

    I am building up a COMPAQ Deskpro 486/33i for a relative. I added a
    Creative SBPRO multimedia kit and a Cardinal 28.8 internal modem.
    When I finally got most of the software loaded, I found that I am
    getting General Protection Faults when I EXIT MSword or MSExcel.
    Has anyone ever come across this probelem?

    Software:
    	DOS6.2
    	Win3.1
    	QEMM 7.0
    	MSOffice 4.2 (WORD 6.0, Excel 5.0)
    	Can't recall the FAX/Modem software title

    Just a guess,

    it's been a while since I played with a similar combination, but I
    think you may need to make QEMM a little less "agressive" in the memory
    areas it seeks out.

    In a prior job, the standard was dos/win3.11/qemm on Compaq hardware,
    and we found that we had to "back off" QEMM just a touch (I forget just
    where the option was now, it's been 3 years!) to make it just a little
    less agressive.

    It's not much, but I hope this helps,

2950.2More DataNPSS::PAREFri Mar 14 1997 11:5912
    re .1
    	Thanks for the suggestion. I've got some more data from
    experimenting last night. The system works fine with mulitimedia and
    MSOffice and all until I install the FaxTalk modem software. After
    that, I start getting that GPF error with Excel and MSWord. The only
    way to fix it is to completely reinstall Win3.1 and MSoffice. I've
    tried just uninstalling the FaxTalk software and the problem persists.
    Even if I do a clean boot from floppy, the problem persists. I am
    running standard VGA from WIN3.1 on the video. It seems like the
    installation of the FAXTalk software clobbers some Windows system file.
    I've sent EMAIL to Cardinal and also the folks I purchased the modem
    from.

    Is the FAX line set up as the default printer?

    That's a good point. I'm not sure. But I do know that the problem
    persists even after uninstalling the modem (software and harware).
    Tonight I'm going to try backing up my WIN.INI file before the problem
    occurs. Then I will cause the problem to happen and see if I can fix it
    by just restoring WIN.INI. If that doesn't help, I may try using
    different modem software (QUICKLINK II). Hopefully, Quicklink II will
    recognize that modem.

2950.5Quicklink II worked!NPSS::PAREMon Mar 17 1997 11:075
    Well, Quicklink II worked fine so I'm not going to mess with it any
    longer. I sent EMAIL to Cardinal regarding the software conflict with
    MSWord but got no response.
