2914.0. "Modem Mayhem" by AYOV20::SYS_132726 () Mon Feb 10 1997 13:56

A friend has this problem with her modem...
her father swithced off the power to the PC to decorate & since the
powerup the modem/fax will not work.

I have checked the phone line (OK)
the extension into the phone skt (OK)
the cable from the faxcard to the extension skt (ok)
the Modem AT - returns OK, so I assume the modem is ok.

On my modem when you type AT (return), you get a dial tone
I don,t get this on the friends
& in a terminal emulaor if you type ATD269867 we get no carrier
Is there anyway to test from the card out to the phone skt (loopback)
I was going to tell her the circuit to the outside world looks as if
it has blown & to purchase another, but any help prior to my advice
    would be appreciated

Check the phone cord into the fax/modem.

Many modems have a pair of jacks, one goes to the phone line (wall jack),
the other can go to a telephone. On some modems, it doesn't work if you
plug the line into the wrong one.

The owners husband did this before he shouted me to have a look
but I swapped the cable back to line fron phone

I think they will have to purchase a new one...

the pc/accesories were purchased in Hong Kong & the people concerned
now live in Scotland - UK
