| DMI stands for the Desktop Management Interface. A computer with a
DMI-compliant BIOS, and a DMI service layer can respond to network
requests for information about the computer's configuration, and even
make changes by remote request.
Its a system management tool designed to give more control of remote
systems to system managers with lots of PCs to administer.
A simple example is that the system manager can instruct all his PCs to
configure themselves for a specific power management configuration.
Fancier uses maintain a full FRU (factory replaceable unit) description
of the system, so that if something fails or needs to be upgraded, you
can click on the description and get the part number you need to order
it.
A DMI browser is a generic tool for querying local or remote systems
for the information that is available through the DMI interface.
