re: all of the above
I did solve the problem from this thread -- thank you!
What was the problem, you ask? *FAST OPEN*!!!
I disabled it, and the CPU hasn't paused since...

(sorry; I'm only in my office here in Digital about once or
twice a month!)

2839.23 | so how do you turn it off? | AIAG::SEGER | This space intentionally left blank | Mon Feb 03 1997 09:12 | 7 |
| I've heard of fast open, but don't know a whole lot about it. I seem to recall
earlier mentions of it building indexes of all your files and the pause is
generated when it updates them. Is that about correct?
So how do you disable it? I couldn't even find a reference in HELP.

2839.24 | Another program causing PAUSE? | OGOPW1::ogodhcp-125-128-11.ogo.dec.com::Diaz | | Mon Feb 03 1997 10:58 | 12 |
| I reinstall W95 in my 450ST (I was having all kind of wierd errors) and
reloaded most patches (Service Pack1, OLE, RAS, backup, etc).
Coincidental to that (my impression), my system developed the "taking a pause"
sympthom. I did have FINDFAST a while back, but it has not been running in my
system for a month or so. I was ready to do an install from scratch, but
earlier this morning i checked my Startup subdirectory and noticed a program
called SCOUT. I removed it and I haven't noticed the pause since then.
Anyone knows what is the puropose of this program?

| I should have checked the Windows 95 conference before. In any case, have anyone
seen the "pause"behavior with SCOUT?

I know this is probably a dumb question, but I recently discovered a program
called SCOUT in my start folder. I have no idea what it does or how it got
there (though I'm sure I had something to do with it at least indirectly).
My thought is to just delete it, but I'd rather first at least know what (if
anything) is happening every time I boot.

this is an ms internally used program and you probably are running some
kind of multiple upgraded beta version of uncertain origin!

I thought it went 'scouting' for processes and stuff to clean up when you
shutdown - or crash
