What's an Adaptec 1542C/CF ISA SCSI Adapter worth with manuals and
software that came with it? Since I went PCI SCSI I am going to want to
sell this. Is $100 or so reasonable? I haven't checked on the web for
what they're going for but will shortly.

Starion 910 for $700 they say.... here is my situatiion

    I have 3 320Ps, and a buy/sell old/new machines will give me $100
a piece for them. (or maybe less).

Then, (and this is my question), they have a used Starion 910 for sale:
        P-75
        16MB Ram
        850MB HDD (smalllllll)
        x4 CD (slow)
        33.6 modem (okay) (think there is a 2nd "onboard" modem 14.4 Com1)
        + speakers.....

What you see is what you get.... they are asking $700. Now, 700 less
my old 320ps would be $400 net.

        1) Anything odd about the 910, or is it terrific for $700
        2) Any better ways to transition from the 320ps.

I don't know about the Starion, but if you advertise the 320P's here, I
think you'd manage to get at least $100 a piece for them, if not more.

I saw some mail recently where Digital was selling refurb'ed ones for
    about $250.

    re.161 Starion 910

I purchased a 911, similar config with 8MB and only the 14.4 modem but
with all the software, warranty, etc for about $800 from PC's Complete
last June. (Plus shipping, no tax back then) I would think with prices
for new multimedia pentiums in the 133MHz range as low as they are,
$700 sound a bit high for a used slow system.

If that's what you want, I'd consider giving PC's Complete a call and
see if they have any of the old slow systems still available. EPP still
gets you a few bucks off their published prices.

If it's in working condition, donate it to a local school. My son's
junior high, for example, is full of 286 systems! They would, of course,
prefer one with a monitor. You'd be able to take a tax deduction for a
reasonable value of the system.

Leaving aside the value of the software (which is worth $zero unless
the licences are being handed over, too) the rest of the system is
    worth roughly $250-300...

Just curious, so does it help to just 'part out'...other than the
hassle and possibly getting stuck with a 486DX2-66 or some such
    thing?

"Parting out" can indeed be a hassle - especially when you're dealing
with a system that's as far behind the current performance/feature curve
as the system in .171. You might have to put some actual effort into
unloading stuff for painfully small bucks.

It may be more rewarding to find a beneficiary to donate such a system
to (in full working condition, of course)...

That price must be for some no-name clone, without a monitor. Compaq's touted
"cheap" PC costs $1000 without a monitor, and uses a 133 MHz Cyrix (not Intel)
chip. The 14" monitor adds another $300.

    re: .last couple

Sure, they're clone pricing - why pay more for a friggin' badge? If you
think Dell/GW2K/Compaq are selling substantially superior stuff at
anything but very the top end, you're kidding yourself.

And non-MMX at that (note I said "133mhz Pentium" - not "133mhz Pentium
MMX"). BIG price differentials there - even before yesterday's price
cuts (where the non-MMX Pentium pricing took a major nose-dive).

And yes, of course without monitor (as the 486 system being addressed
was also sans monitor) - so I gave an "Orange-to-Orange" comparison...

Check out yer local paper for pricing. Pentiums are just plain cheap
    these days...

Although, there are a lot of people who wouldn't consider a monitor

    Nevertheless, I too wouldn't expect to see a 133mhz P133 machine

    in for good luck.

Ooops! Well, even though a used 14" monitor is essentially a doorstop
these days, I definitely missed it in the list. It's worth all of $50
to the value of the system listed...

But as was confirmed, 133mhz Pentium system - with everything *but* the
monitor - can be had for $700. And they'll get a bit cheaper before
    they disappear completely...
