832.9S3 in upgraded DX2 systemHANNAH::MCKINLEYNota beneFri Jan 24 1997 16:3326
     I have a Gateway 486DX-VLB machine running DOS 6.22/Win 3.1. I
     recently got a DX2 chip to go from a 33 MHz CPU to a 66MHz. Not a
cutting edge machine, but it should be enough.

When I put in the new CPU, the video card, ATI graphics ultra pro
(1MB), started to have a problem. It would display the Windows screen
(1024x768 256 colors) in a skewed way, shrunk about about 30% and
smaller across the bottom edge than the top. Everything still worked
okay, it was just displaying wrong. I tried many combinations of
things to fix it, but couldn't change it. Switching back to the 33MHz
CPU immediately solved the problem, but put the DX2 in would bring
     back the problem.

I tried another video card, a DEC 928 S3 based card. This one would
display correctly in 1024x768 256 colors, but doesn't seem to want to
run 32 bit programs. Running Freecell or Xcursion will crash the
driver (S32flat.drv). I have the latest version of the driver from
the DEC web site. Running at lower resolutions, I can get a good
display and all programs run, however this isn't the solution that I
     want.

Can anyone help me get one of these cards working?

     Thanks,

     ---Phil

Your description of the skewed picture sounds like the video board was
not driving the monitor at the right refresh rate.

The monitor is a DEC VRC16 multisync monitor. I didn't change any
settings between removing the 33MHz CPU and installing the DX2. The
bus speed on the system didn't change, so I'm not sure why the video
card was affected, but it was!

    Thanks for the try!

What do you mean by "will crash the driver (S32flat.drv)? Do you have a
    GPF pointing on the latter?
    What OS do you run?

Yes, I get a GPF pointing to S32flat.drv while running Windows 3.1.
Actually, everything freezes, then I hit ctrl-alt-del, get the kill
app/reboot screen. If I choose either kill app or continue, the app
crashes with a GPF. The system will continue to run in Windows, but
the display will be messed up with missing pieces of windows, poor colors,
     etc.

What is the driver you are using? Is it v2.50-06 vs00250f.exe?
I never tried to run the S3 928 card on non-DEC PC's but still expect
it to work w/o problems. There were problems on earlier drivers'
versions, but it was awhile ago.
Try to reinstall the drivers,- i.e.
    -exit windows
-delete all s3*.* from windows\system directory
    -delete oemX.inf (s3 related)
    -run setup from c:\windows

    Sam,

Thanks for the note. I'll have to check, but I think that the drivers
that I have are from www.cgo.dec.com/idx/cica_idx_drivers_video.html
I know that I initially did an internal AltaVista search and that was
the newest one to show up.

I copied what may be newer drivers from the pcbu home page and if they
are different, I'll give those a try.

832.16Video driving on...HANNAH::MCKINLEYNota beneWed Jan 29 1997 10:0410
Success! I got the new driver installed and working. What I
previously thought was the newest driver, was just the newest one that
AltaVista found on the day that I searched. With so many copies out
there, it can be hard to tell what's right. Now that I know where the
"official" pcbu page is, I'll use that.

    Thanks for the help.
