| I did a quick search of this for 'mail' didn't see anything relating to
downloading.
I sent my father an attached jpg file which he viewed correctly via AOL's
mail interface. He then downloaded it, called my mother (it was a picture of
my son so he wanted to show it off!) to come look at it and he could no longer
view the picture. The text was there (ie "here is a picture of...") but not
the attached file.
Does AOL's mail leave the attchments on the server ? Is this an option maybe
(ie don't download the attachment)?
Thanks,
Brian J.

Nothing that I know of - it just showed up - I have no clue how AOL mail works
but I doubt very much he has a "helper app" (NS terms) to display the image.

By default, AOL downloads the Email without downloading the attachments. There
is an option in the personal preferences that you check that will cause
attachments to be automatically downloaded with the email.
To download manually, log into AOL and bring up the Email message with the
attachment. There should be a "download" button to the left of the Email
message. Clicking on the download button should download the file attached
to the Email message.

561.78 | How simple can it get? | PGREEN::HAYESI | Is that a warp nacelle in your pocket...? | Mon Mar 17 1997 08:51 | 26 |
| This is not specifically an AOL query, but it seems relevant.
My in-laws (70+) are keen to get on-line - mainly to be able to e-mail
sons who are in NZ and Canada. They are not well off so cost is a
major factor.
I have given them an old 386/2Mb on which I've loaded Windows 3.1 which
runs in Standard mode (not enough memory for enhanced - and No! it
can't be upgraded).
The question is: What service do I get them signed up to?
What they need is a clean (read: easy to understand), simple (read:
runs quickly enough) e-mail interface with the possiblity of a bit of
web browsing if/when they get adventurous.
The current round of software from AOL/Compuserve/et al seems not to
meet either of the above requirements.
If necessary, I'll even set up their system to use a DOS based client.
Any opinions or experiences?
Thanks,
Ian.

| re: no upgrade
If you have one free slot in the system, you could try to find an old
junky AST Advantage board. The base board could support up to another
1.5 (or is it 2?) meg of (slow) memory (at AT bus speed).
I used that trick when my main machine was a 386/SX-40 and I couldn't
afford to buy new SIMMs (back in the days of $45+US per meg).
It won't run very fast, but it might be enough to get into enhanced
mode with about 4 meg of memory, if that's the major drawback with the
current configuration.
Otherwise, if the motherboard is a standard size (big IF, perhaps), you
might find some dirt-cheap 386 board at a show which CAN be upgraded
and swap it out.
Also, you MIGHT squeak by if you install the Linux operating system and
the text-based Lynx browser, but under the circumstances, a turnkey
Windows solution is probably the most friendly solution.

community.
My in-laws are retired in Florida. Similar to you, I set them up with a 386 running
Windows 3.1. I installed AOL, but two things happened:
1. They grew up with type writers, and have hard time using the mouse and GUIs. They
prefer ASCII-type menus.
2. Their library system in Florida offers a free access to the library network, that
is primarily intended for looking up for publications, but also includes a text
based e-mail system that is enough for their needs, and can't beat the price, so
after the trial period of AOL, they cancell it.
