I just picked up a Sportster 28.8 Winmodem. I'm installing (or trying to) in
a PB 100MHZ, WIN95, 24Meg system. It has a 14.4 modem which seems to have
the soundcard/game port, etc all in one.

When I install the modem, and fire up the system I get a "resource conflict"
message and can't address the new modem. Is there a way around this, to
disable 14.4 modem and still use the soundcard/game port?

Most of those combination cards have a jumper to disable the modem. It's
probably parking on a COM port which the WinModem wants to use. You might
see if the WinModem can be forced to use COM3 (assuming nothing else is
on COM3.)

Hmm...the Winmodem wants to use COM3..

Well, what else is on COM3?

open the control panel and double click on the 'winmodem' icon

here you can deselect 'Select COM Port Automatically' and
three lines down you can specify what com port you want it on.

It will list (free) behind the ones it sees as available.
I'm sure you'll have to restart win95 after making the change.

Nothing (that I can see)..I run the install software and it comes back
telling me that it's installed on COM3. However, I get the "resource
conflict" message when I reboot the system..

Thanks...will this disable the gameport/sound card portion of the
    "combination card"?

COM3 is associated with a PORT address and an IRQ. Most likely, there
is an IRQ conflict. Do the check as stated a couple notes back with
    IRQs in mind.

Thank you for the tips..being something of a novice I'm a little nervous
messing around with this stuff. Unfortunately, I thought replacing the
old modem would be a breeze, not realizing the old one had all the other
 stuff on it.

 Jim

    Jim,

the winmodem screen wont do anyhting with the old modem, but
it might let you move the winmodem off to com4 if its free and use
the winmodem while you figure out what to do about the 14.4/game port
    card.

certainly there is a conflict but if you arent used to figuring
those sorts of things out, maybe just moving the winmodem to a
    non-conflict setting is good enough.

OK, here is where I am with this nightmare:

. I've been able to disable the modem on the modem/soundcard/gamecard.
. I install the new modem, WIN95 puts it in COM3.
. when launching windows I get a "resource conflict sportster winmodem 28.8"
  message
. when clicking on the MODEMS icon in control panel it shows the new modem
  on COM port 3
. when clicking on "more information" in the MODEMS icon on c/p, I get
an "illegal operation" or similar message after a dialogue box that
  says "checking modem"
. when doing help/troubleshoot/hardware conflict and clicking on the new
modem, the troubleshooter says "click on resource tab" with an option
box for "I do not see a resource tab" (which I don't). It then comes
back and says it sees no conflict.

there are no jumpers on the old board, I don't quite get how to change the
IRQ settings (plug and play are set by WIN95 right?)

I don't see any other devices on COM 3, though I'm not sure if the system
 supports COM3..

Am I making this more complicated than need be?
540.79CSC32::B_GRUBBSFri May 02 1997 12:4829

Open system in the control panel, select the device manager
tab, expand the 'Ports (COM and LPT)' group to see what you got.
Anything in conflict with have a big yellow !. You'll probably
see the winmodem listed this way on COM3.

Check the properties of each com port to see what irq/io address
they are using and see which one is overlapping the winmodem.
You suspect the combo sc/modem card, but you dont know for sure
till you look here. If it is that combo card, and it has no jumpers
there's probably a dos utility that can change the setting on
the card, sometimes you can change them in the control panel
under properties for that device and it will configure the card
    with the new values.

You may also want to highlight 'computer' on the system screen
and choose properties. this will give you a complete list of
irq's used on the system so you can look for possible conflicts.

The winmodem setting for what com port it uses can be changed
under it's properties here too. I still think
you should force it to COM4 if you've got nothing listed
on the system panel under ports as being on COM4 already.

jarred something loose in my brain.

 appreciate the help.

 Problem solved...

I had disabled the old modem
installed the new one which went to com3
all of the IRQs were being used
 Com1 was still there..I removed com1
 removed the new modem(drivers)
 reinstalled the drivers
it put the modem on COM1
 voila!

.79 Thanks for the tip there..when looking at the device manager I had
been looking at the "modem" rather than "ports"....

 what a dummy!

Jim
