We're running HSM 2.1 and Alpha VMS 6.2. I notice that the entries in the HSM catalog stay around for files which have had their headers deleted (even a long time back). In theory this means the HSM catalog file keeps growing indefinitely. This isn't a problem for us yet, but it doesn't seem like creating a file that grows forever is a good idea. Is there some way to remove HSM catalog entries for files whose headers are no longer present on the original disk? When do deleted entries get purged or when does the catalog file get compressed?

345.1 | Only way is doing a REPACK | ATZIS3::KARTNER_M | HOUSTON, we have a problem | Tue Jun 03 1997 07:31 | 22 |
Hi! The only way to get rid of obsolete entries in the hsm$catalog is by doing a repack of the archive classes. All files that have been deleted for longer than the /keep_time defined for the SHELF are removed by repacking. But there are some prerequisites for using repack: a) PLUS MODE only b) you need two compatible tape drives c) you must have the Saveset Manager installed (which is licensed with HSM) The main benefit of repacking is that you free up tapes becouse the osolete data aren't moved to the new tape volumes. (tape repacking moves all usefull data to following volumes and releases the older ones which contain a hich percantage of obsolate data) I hope this helps Michael |
