329.0. "'volume not software enable' when running in dual redundancy mode (HSJ) on shelve commands" by CSC32::V_HEINICKE () Thu Mar 27 1997 08:41

Hi,

Config:

V2,8a SLS
V2.1 HSM
V6.2 VMS
V27J-1 HSJ40
2 8400s

Customer (Deccie in England) is encountering problems when shelving
operations are being performed on dual redundant TLA20 connected to
HSJ40s. Appropimately 6 hours into the procedure, he receives a 'volume not
software enabled' error. He is not running in preferred mode. The only time
this problem occurs is when running dual redundancy. If he disables
dual redundancy, he does not get the above error.

Roland is at a secure site and cannot send the HSM log files to us. I have
requested that he write down the complete error messages from the log files
and add them to this note.

He is able to shut down one of the controllers and restart HSM which clears
the problem.

Please reference note 317. There appear to be three different folks working
the issue. After reviewing note 317, I am not sure what the staus of the
problem is currently. Roland was to go back and request an update.

Has HSM been tested on the above config and if so, has anyone experienced this
behavior.

Thanks,

Victoria

Hello Victoria.

Troubleshooting should start with configuration information for this type
(media mgmt) problem. Please post the appropriate lines from TAPESTART.COM,
which configure the TL820 (not TLA20) robots and their respective tape drives.
HSM logs often point to symptoms, not causes, in cases like this.

WRT note #317. I have recommended that Doug seek advice for any recurring
MRD_LOAD_START failures in the COOKIE::SLS conference.

Regards,
/Paul

    Victoria,

    The error logs showed some (unrelated) errors on disks in the same
    timeframe as the HSM problem; we have replaced the problem drive.
    Shortly thereafter, a writeback cache module in one of the HSM related
    HSJ40s (Node04) showed up as bad. Node04 had its cache batteries
    replaced about a week prior to that failure. After replacing the cache
    module in Node04 (it tests good now), the other HSM related HSJ40 (Node05)
    reported a bad cache. Hmmmm! With all the confusing symptoms, it seems
    time to get the HW stabilized and try to regroup and get a "clean" HSM
    failure to analyse.

    Thanks Paul,

    He has this set up differently than most - using the following
    to set up the jukebox.

        $ TAPE_JUKEBOXES    :==     "TLA,TLB"
        $ TLA :== 'F$FA0("!AS$3$DUA300:,!-!AS$3$MUA330:,!-!AS$3$MUA440:, -
        $                   !AS$3$MUA450:",
        $ TLB :== 'F$FA0("!AS$3$DUA500:,!-!AS$3$MUA530:,!-!AS$3$MUA640:, -
        $                   !AS$3$MUA650:",

    I also see some problems with the media triplets so will send him mail.
    Before we go any further, he does need to address the hardware issues.
