323.0. "REPACK TO RECOVER DAMAGED TAPE VOLUMES" by WOTVAX::SMITHD () Fri Feb 28 1997 07:17
I have a question on using REPACK to recover a damaged tape cartridge used in
an HSM archive class. We have VMS version 6.2, HSM version 2.1 and two
TL820 tape libraries. Each tape library contains the tapes for one separate
archive class.
I tried SMU REPACK 2/FROM_ARCHIVE=3/VOLUME=BEF012/NOTHRESHOLD.
Tapes BEF7xx are in archive class 3 and BEF0xx are in archive class 2. BEF012
had gotten damaged.
Log messages below. Here are my questions
BEF023 got loaded into $3$MUA330 around the time of the last HSM$SHP_AUDIT
message. Why was BEF023 loaded at all? It was not part of the volume set
I wanted repaired. I understand why all of the FROM_ARCHIVE had to get
analyzed, but not why the remainder of the destination archive was touched
at all.
The request seemed to hang forever after that OPCOM message got generated.
How should I respond to the OPCOM message?
Any suggestions. Is the SMU command correct for what I'm trying to do?

323.1 | REPACK writes contence to NEW tapes | ATZIS1::KARTNER_M | HOUSTON, we have a problem | Mon Mar 03 1997 03:12 | 11 |
| Hi!
HSM REPACK doesn't "rebuild" the damaged tape physicaly (You won't get
tapes with the same label back). Instead it will write all data
contained on the "lost" tapes to new volumes.
Am I right that BEF023 was the current & last available tape of
your BEF0 pool ?
I hope this helps
Michael

323.2 | Try with empty tapes | WOTVAX::KOLLODGE | | Tue Apr 01 1997 02:15 | 4 |
| Thanks Michael,
That helps a lot. I'll slap a few empty tapes in the BEF0 pool and try
again.
