| Well,
Your first problem is how to connect the RW552. You have 2 options :
1) Directly connected SCSI. Adapters are KZPSA, KZPAA. If distance is an
issue, select the differential interface and KZPSA adapter.
2) Behind an HSx-controller. You'l have to wait till HSOF V3.1/5.1 comes out;
otherwise your config isn't supported.
Your second problem is to install OSMS. You'll need version 3.4, which you'll
have to order from SSB. The kit is *NOT* on the network.
If you've done all that, you have to install HSM. There are examples in the
'Guide of Operations' on how to get HSM to work with opticals.
Tip: You do *NOT* need "Media and Device Management Services" at all.

| RE: .0
A 2.6 GB optical disk will work with the RW552 but if you are going
to drive the RW552 via OSMS V3.4 the largest media you can use is the
2.3 GB optical disk.
Please note: The optical media for RW5xx hardware is not "CD".
RE: .1
Hans,
Is there a relationship that HSM has with HSx-controllers? I do not
understand your statement about waiting for HSOF V3.1/5.1 if the
RW552 is going to be driven by OSMS V3.4.

It will be used via CMD's Trident controllers. I have someone at the
customer site seeing if the RW552 can be used with these controllers
and if their firmware is up to rev.

This doesn't come on the CONSDIST? Would the customer have known to
order it? So would they have gotten it already? If not, what is the
part number?
Thanks for all your help.

.3 continued
When the customer checked with CMD, the RW552 has not been tested with
their Trident controller either and asked if the customer goes for it to
let CMD know how it goes. So we are considering using a port on an HSJ
although we would have to do some shuffling. So I do need to know if
I need the HSOF V3.1/5.1 to get the job done and when it will be
available.

322.5 | Still not sure about this whole thing | CHOWDA::GLICKMAN | writing from Newport,RI | Fri Feb 28 1997 10:29 | 27 |
| Still more questions.
The functionality this customer is looking for is to have an
archive policy that moves data that fits the archive criteria
from their disk farm of RZ28s (online available mass storage) to
the archive media which is the RW552 optical jukebox with 64
2.3 GB MO disks.
The analyst looking into this has been reading the POLYCENTER
HSM OpenVMS Guide for Operations. He has found that the supported
devices for this type of operation is really some type of tape media.
MO devices are supported as the cache device rather than the nearline/
offline media. I am writing this message to confirm this finding. As
in did management here not purchase the complete solution for their
needs?
Based on what the customer has already purchased (RW552 optical
jukebox, OSMS, and HSM) and running on OpenVMS 6.1 VAX is there anyway
to implement a supported archiving solution?
At this point in time we have no magnetic disks or tape devices that can
be dedicated to HSM.
Do I need to be putting this into the Optical notes conference as well?
Appreciating any inputs.
