3298.0. "[Network] dnet_addr(N058V2) failed, error=997" by TOHOPE::WSA028::DOWNING_L () Wed May 28 1997 21:38

(cross posted to the PATHWORKS32 notesfile)
Hello,

I have a customer who cannot get the eXcursion server to start.

He is getting the following message, which I cannot find in the
documentation:

	[Network] dnet_addr(N058V2) failed, error=997

This is a new installation of PATHWORKS 32. DECnet is the only transport.
The system is a Windows NT Workstation, version 4.0.

FAL and NFT work fine.
He's got the DECnet node's and addresses defined, up'd the MAX LINKS, is using
valid logon info (to his OpenVMS Alpha). He's renamed LOGIN.COM of the VMS
user account that he's using.

What else is there to look for?

Does anyone know what that '997' means?

I don't know specifically what 997 is but, I will say that I've had
some behavior with Winsock 2.0 and DECnet that forced me to completely
uninstall PATHWORKS 32 and reinstall it before eXcursion would -
    inexplicably - start working.

Wish I could shed more light....

When you say "new installation of pw32" do you mean 7.0 ssb ? 7.0a TIMA
field test software ?

When you say excursion won't start, do you mean you can't start the
excursion server ? Or do you mean that after you start the excursion server
you can't start any x apps ?

One thing to try is use ncp on your vms end and your NT end and make
sure you can "loop node" to the other. If not, then something in decnet
isn't quite right yet.

Another thing to try is, if it's your x apps and not the initial excursion
startup that's failing, try running the x apps from a terminal emulator
instead of launching them from the NT side. Use "set display" on vms
to point back to your NT. (I assume you know what I'm talking about, ask
if you need more details).

   Thanks for the quick response.

He is using the SSB version of PATHWORKS 32 V7.0, not 7.0A.

The server started one time, but it wouldn't run anything but
FileView. He tried to restart it, but it wouldn't start, and
    he got the error:
    [Network] dnet_a0ddr(N058V2) failed, error=997

I asked him to look for an X$X0 link, and he found it and deleted it.
Now, when he retries starting the servier, he gets GPF's on the PC.
An access violation occurs in wxserver.exe.

The eXcursion log still shows the '997' error.

Here's the netserver.log from the failure:

Linda, has the PC been rebooted since the Xserver quit?
I had one case with the same error number where our only recourse was
to reboot the PC and then it started to work again.

Another thing that appeared to come from the same call was a problem
with an invalid entry in the "Valid Nodes" list under the Control Panel
"Access" tab. It was causing eXcursion to crash in this case.

Do a Comet search on "313872" and "watson" in CHAMP_97 and you should
    find that particular call.

We had a case where there was a problem starting the excursion
server on an SMP system.

Is your system an smp system ?

Another problem which causes confusion is decitot.sys.

To see if you have this problem, after excursion server is
crashed or exited, look at task manager, and look at "processes"
not "applications". Click on the "image name" heading once or
twice until the images are shown in REVERSE alphabetical order.

You should see "wxserver.exe" there once if excursion server
is running normally. If you see MORE than one wxserver.exe, or
if you see any at all when wxserver.exe is supposedly not running
at all, then you've got decitotitis. Many have this dreaded disease
and don't even know it.

To cure decitotitis, find your decitot.sys file and rename it
to decitot.nosys and reboot. Unfortunately, this is likely
to cause "at least one service failed to start". To find out
how to prevent this, you may need to consult the pathworks32
conference or release notes to read about how more formally to
remove decitot from your system.

WARNING: If you really need decitot for your other work, DO NOT
rename it. The rename works fine for me because I don't use
decitot for anything else.

Another thing to check which has already sort of been mentioned
is the ncp links. Once task manager acknowledges that no
wxserver.exe's are left, use ncp and kill off any orphaned X$X0
links (I assume you know how to use "ncp set link ... state off" or
"ncp set known links state off".

Rebooted several times, it doesn't help

All defined nodes are valid. The only nodes defined now are two nodes of his
SCSIcluster, and his Windows NT 4.0 Server with PATHWORKS 32.

Gary, yes, we have the same error code, but you lucked out.

No, DEC Celebris GL 6200ST

He started the server with Task Manager/Processes open in
reverse alphabetical order, and can see wxserver start. Then gets the access
violation process crash, but wxserver remains in the task list.

The message log continues to display

                dnet_addr(N058V2) failed, error=997

Is there any word on what error 997 is?

This whole process seems to have also killed the DECwindows Motif servers on
both of his VMS servers. He'll be rebooting the cluster tonight, so I'll see if
that has any effect.

He has also removed amd reinstalled the Excursion software to no avail.

Did the drwatson log help any?

Would a trap be more helpful?

The cluster reboot did not have any effect on this problem.

Access control is not enabled.

None of the applications are set to autostart.

There was only one wxserver process in task manager during eXcursion startup.

NCP LOOP NODE works both ways between the pc and the VMS system.

"Valid" in this case means name-resolvable via either DECnet or TCP/IP.
Is the NT server resolvable? (Actually, if he's not displaying X clients
from the NT system it shouldn't be in the list of Valid nodes in the
    first place.)

And I've found that turning off access control, doesn't seem to stop
the name resolution at eXcursion startup.

That suggests decitotitis. Does wxserver remain in the task list
if you disengage decitot as I described ?

As for access control, if you're *sure* it's off, then fine.
However, I discovered yesterday that even *valid* node entries
in access control will prevent excursion from starting. I replied
in another note yesterday about how to use regedit to undo this.

I'd like to try to reproduce the problem here. You said the system
only has decnet. All the systems I normally use here have
tcp, and then for some we install pathworks so then we have tcp
and decnet.

But I'm not familiar with running with only decnet. If you tell
me a bit about how to do that, I could give it a try to see if
I can reproduce your crash here.

I don't think a trap file will help, since trap files record
what an x app is doing, so if your excursion server is crashing
before any x app is even run, then the trap won't help.

As for drwatson, I've never worked from one before. I usually
debug with msdev, using symbols. If I need to work from your
drwatson, I'll have to find a link map file so I can correlate
the hex addresses with symbols.

Oh, here's an idea. CAUTION: This will wipe out *all* your
excursion customizations. Go into regedit and totally delete these
trees (or rename them if you want to get them back later):

	ExcursionV2.0...
	ExcrusionV3.0...

They'll be under Software/Digital...

Do this for both LOCAL_MACHINE and CURRENT_USER. Does this allow
excursion to start up ?
