3284.0. "Bad (boxey) Netscape news reader fonts???" by WRKSYS::NISHIMOTO () Fri May 09 1997 10:11

I'm running netscape (UNIX) to an NT box through eXcursion 3.0
and am having font problems with the News reader (I think it's
eXcursion and not netscape, because this used to work with
        netscape 2.02, but doesn't anymore).

When I bring up the news reader, the text which has the
names of the newgroups and the box that has the new article
subjects have all glyphs as these "boxey" things and I can't
read any of them. The only way to see them is for me to
occlude the window and then expose the window. The text is
then drawn correctly. However, when I click on the frames,
it goes back to the "boxey"/unreadable glyphs.

What eXcursion thing do I have to "fix"?

                        Pete

Does boxy equate to the standard VT100 line-drawing characters. (Like
the ones you see when you run notes in character cell mode.) Or are
they just badly formed text characters. (Pieces missing, for example.)

Are there any badfont messages in the eXcursion message log? (Compare
timestamps to make sure you're not picking up badfont messages from
    other applications.)

What font directories are listed in the fonts tab in the eXcursion
    control panel?

Badly formed glyphs. Best I can describe them are that they
are mostly white, with little pieces of black in the
corners. The character itself is "seeable", but each glyph
is a little over the previous glyph and so some characters are
unintelligible. Note that this looks like glyphys for which the
	background is not transparent.

Nope. I just turned logging on and brought up the News
	window again. No messages.

Note I have the same problems when bringing up the Bookmarks
    	window (to rearrange my bookmarks).

    Yuck!

I just looked at 3.0 news. What a mess.

It looks less to me like a font problem and more of an area fill
problem. On my system I get a series of black and white checks in the
"Unread" column. It looks like a repeating, 1-plane deep,
white-on-black duplicate of whatever is in the the Green checkmark
column. (A check if the check is there, a dot if it's cleared.)

Similarly, the "Name" column has ghosts of the little PC and news items
icons, normally found in the first column.

FWIW, the problem is seen in the VMS version of Netscape 3.0 as well.
I sit about 30 feet from one of the VMS netscape developers, I'll see
if we can find out what's going on in those columns.

2.1 does not have this problem but when I viewed it with 2.1 I notice
that at least some the characters that are causing this problem are bolded.
    Don't know if that's significant.

If you believe this an excursion problem, please qar it with specifics
of how to reproduce. (if I have to install netscape, say in qar from
    where I install it)

    Thanks.

    	Ok. Entered as QAR 530.

I made it a show stopper because it really is bad. Makes news
reading and bookmarks editing (and who knows whatever else)
    	impossible.

We asked one of our engineers (Boris) to look at it. I told him
to verify with you that you did the font alias stuff that the excursion
release notes talk about for CDE (are you using CDE on your unix ?)

No one (like Boris) has contacted me yet, but again, I'm
running Netscape *TO* my NT box, so there's no CDE involved
(at least, I don't *think* so...)

Right. At least on my PC, I'm not hitting the Dux system with XDMCP
and therefore am not starting CDE. Just 3.0 Gold from Dux. Or 3.0b5
    from Alpha OVMS.

Gee, any update here? Sure would like to fix my bookmarks list....

The other engineer here has checked in a fix for this problem.
We don't have an image online yet though for you to test.
