3252.0. "Excursion V3.0 Technical description/spd TCPquery" by MKTCRV::KMANNERINGS () Tue Mar 18 1997 08:43

Is there an spd lookalike technical description of Excursion V3.0 anywhere,
'cos if there is, I sure can't find it.

A customer is buying pw32 and he has netware clients using a netware
tcp/ip stack. He wants to know if this is supported by excursion V3.0

Can someone point me in the right direction please?

The SPD for PATHWORKS 32 states, regarding eXcursion:

"Support for TCP/IP from Microsoft and DECnet in PATHWORKS 32 V7.0, on
Windows 95 and Windows NT V4.0."

It looks as though it's not supported. I guess I'm out of touch with
the world, since I didn't know that Novell even has a TCP/IP stack for
Win95 or NT. I don't know if it would work. eXcursion used to support
alternate TCP/IP stacks, but very few 32-bit OS users seem to be using
anything other than the Microsoft stacks. I doubt that it's been
tested with anything other than the Windows95 TCP/IP and the NT 4.0
    TCP/IP.

    Find the SPD at: http://webir.das.dec.com/lists/SPD_WN.HTML
Search for PATHWORKS 32. Should be pretty nearly the top of the list.

I imagine the TCP/IP stack is purely Netware, nothing to do with
    Windows XX.

So, unless there is an eXcursion for Netware, I don't see how eXcursion
will be used in that environment. Or is the customer interested in
creating an X client running on NT, being served by some other X server
    running on the Netware clients?

    Puzzled,

    /Bill

Previous versions of eXcursion supported Novell's Lanworkplace TCP/IP for
DOS, which provided a DOS-based TCP/IP stack to DOS/Win3.x users.
Such a thing would be clumsy, if not unworkable on Windows 95. My
question is why would Novell supply a Win95 TCP/IP stack when there's
    already one there for "free?"

3252.4"spd" for excursion still wantedMKTCRV::ESCTECHWed Mar 19 1997 11:138
.3 had the story right, and the partner hs called the customer to tell
him that w95 or nt won't work it.

But on the question of the technical description of excursion, I have
the pw32 spd of course, but haven't we go something on Excursion V3
apart from the few scraps in the pw32 spd?

I haven't seen anything like the older 2.1 tech info documents. You
might want to have a look at the most recent Customer Update:

    http://webir.das.dec.com/objects/CU4901/

Or the equivalent Sales Update for internals:

hmm, yes, I had found those, but it is not exactly a proper technical
description is it? So all we have are a few lines in the pw32 spd. This
ain't the right way to SELL sw.

"Boooh"ing in here probably won't get much action. ;-) You might want to
take it up with the Product Manager (Currently Rob Emsley)
But I do agree with you.

Here's something to look at. If you haven't already seen it, look
at ljsrv1"xkits berkshires"::[xcur_v2.docs]TECH_NT.PS. This is the
2.1 Tech overview. Does it suit your needs? Perhaps the originals of
these might be found and updated. (Eric, if you're listening, I believe that
Dave R. had copies of these. If his accounts are still around, he
might have the .DOC files that were used to generate the PS files.)
