3236.0. "Creative/terminal/amnesia" by WONDER::WILLARD () Thu Feb 20 1997 08:56

	Seems silly, but I don't know my name - nodename, that is.

	I'm trying to duplicate the eXcursion environment I have on my
	inside PC on my outside (home) PC. When I log into VMS from
	'IN_PC', my login.com creates some "downhill" X-windows by a
	sequence of:

	  $ set disp/create/transport=tcpip/node=IN-PC
	  $ create/term/blahblahblah

	When I do this for 'OUT-PC', set disp works, but create/term
	complains that it can't open display. It appears that I don't
	know the right string to use for 'OUT-PC'. I tried the value
	listed as Computer Name in the eX control panel, and some variants
	thereof, but nothing helps.

	Is there a permanently-assigned value for 'OUT-PC', or is this
	method of creating "downhill" X-windows undoable via MS DUN?

Cheers, Bob

    Hi Bob,

    Long time no see...

    The chances are good that your 'OUT-PC' IP address is assigned
    dynamically via DHCP and is possibly different every time you dial in.
    I believe you can start your X clients by using the eXcursion control
    panel on your PC side. That way, you won't have to know your own
    address.

    Another suggestion I have, if you mostly use X for DECterms, is to
    select a terminal emulation program that supports telnet. A couple of
    good choices (IMO) are vt320e (aka VTstar) or PowerTerm. Both are free
    for internal use.

    Cheers,

    /Bill

	That's it, Bill; thanks.

	As Bill (.1) suggests, dynamic IP address assignment complicates
	life. So, I hacked my VMS login.com to ask for the IP address, and
	I hacked a DOS .bat to snag the IP address and display it. Since
	the first three fields of the IP address are constant (or nearly so),
	as long as I can pass a couple of digits in the eyes and out the
	fingers without interposing them in the brain, this is tolerable.

	This is office automation for the '90s, right? Feels kinda like
	running QuillPen V7.0 under Parchment-95, with message delivery
	services courtesy of /transport=PonyExpress.

Cheers, Bob

    re: using something other than eXcursion for 'decterms'...

    vt320e is nice - but... no scroll-bars - and it is _such_ a pain when
    what you wanted to see just scrolled off the top of the screen :'(

    dunno about PowerTerm - got a pointer?

    Find all about Powerterm in the JAMIN::PATHWORKS32 notes conference.

    I'm confused. vt320e (vtstar) indeed has scroll bars that work well.

    he probably means VT320, which in newer versions does have scroll bars
    but is still extremely limited. PowerTerm, imho, is a much better
    alternative.
