3224.0. "can't run LAUNCH.EXE if I install under "Program Files"" by HANNAH::SCHULLMAN (Dan Schullman) Fri Jan 24 1997 04:28

eXcursion (V2.1) doesn't work if I install under "Program Files". I tried
using PROGRA~1 instead, but I can't find a way to get Windows 95 to retain
the latter in the LAUNCH.EXE shortcuts, so LAUNCH treats "Files..." as an
argument to the program!

Any suggestions?

						Thanks in advance,
						  Dan S.

p.s. See Windows95 note 2757 about the generic issue of not being able
to retain the short spec for the shortcut target.

I suspect it has something to do with the space character in the words
"program files". Try using a directory without a space in it.

3224.2I believe there are eXcursion and Windows95 bugs hereHANNAH::SCHULLMANDan SchullmanSat Jan 25 1997 02:3519
Eric,

	I suspect the space too. I'd like to keep all my apps in what
	appears to be the preferred Windows 95 tree for them... which
	is under "C:\Program Files\...". As I'm sure you know, it was
	not *I* who chose that folder name!

	[And given the number of times I've run into something like
	 this, though previous problems had workarounds, I'm sort of
	 surprised that MicroSoft didn't use Program_Files!]

	I believe this is an eXcursion bug. Further, I would suggest
	that eXcursion ought to use "Program Files" in its default
	install path.

	[I also believe it's a W95 bug, in that I can't get the target
	 spec to stop converting the PROGRA~1 folder name.]

In the pathworks kit, we finally gave up trying to use "Program Files" as
the root for the default dir. So if you install pathworks you'll see that
it gets installed in

	c:\pw32

rather than

	c:\program files\pw32

The "program files" tree is avoided because just too many different system
components have trouble with that darn space character.

Similar with excursion. Due to all those problems, we have no plans to
move the default root back to "program files". However, if you have trouble
explicitly specifying "program files" as your desired root during installation,
and you believe it's an excursion setup bug (like maybe we forgot to put
quotes somewhere?) then please qar it. system QAR1, user QE_INTERNAL,
password QAR.
