    Hello,
    Ah, so this will be introduced in V4.0D --
    How about V4.0A and V4.0B ? Are there plans to port it there as well ?

    Bug found. It's a little race condition that's in fact harmless.
    The threads code has been modified not to bugcheck when it
    detects the race.

    I believe patches for V4.0b and earlier are in process.
1457.6A CLD may be on the way...PEACHS::LAMPERTPat Lampert, UNIX Applications Support, 343-1050Fri Mar 07 1997 17:196
A major customer, NYNEX, is getting very hot about this problem.
Is the 4.0b patch kit with this fix available yet unofficially?

Thanks.

Pat
1457.7Problem CLD already. See log# MCPM212N1PEACHS::LAMPERTPat Lampert, UNIX Applications Support, 343-1050Mon Mar 10 1997 16:205
The CSC has attached two additional calls to this CLD.
We are awaiting a solution.

1457.8More CLDsRHETT::HALETKYWed Apr 09 1997 14:4810
    THe CSC has attached another call to the CLD. This is a hot issue for a
    Government related job.

    Harmless race conditions still cause the system to fail and threads to
    become unuseable.

    Hmmm, you're missing a smiley face there.

    Since I made the "harmless" comment, I'll respond here because I hate
    having my occasional attempts to be helpful/informative taken and
    repeated back to me completely out of context.

    First, your comment seems to imply that the DECthreads folks
    (of which I am not one) have been taking their time getting
    this fix to market. Wrong. I think we can blame the patch
    process for that turnaround issue.

    And, of course, you obviously must realize that I never meant to say
    that the bugcheck itself was harmless. Just that the fix was simple to
    make by ignoring the kernel's unhelpful detection of an *otherwise*
    harmless race in the target thread's state.

    So next time please keep your unhelpful and uninformative comments
    properly marked with a smiley so that I'll know not to get pissed off
    when I read them....

1457.10Patch available for V4.0BPTHRED::MARYSMary Sullivan, DECthreads EngineeringTue Apr 29 1997 18:174
The V4.0B patch for this problem is now available. See note 8.12.
V4.0 and V4.0A kits are expected in the near future.
