Customer has Decnis V3.0A running on a Decnis600. Load Host : Unix system Also has PC LAN Routing License and Appletalk License for DECNIS. Customer is looking into upgrading to V4.0. The SPD for V4.0 says : ---------------------------------------------------------- Software Licenses DECNIS software licenses allow unrestricted use of the specific software features to which they relate. The following license is included with each DECNIS hardware platform or packaged system: DECNIS Router License: QL-GX7A9-AA The DECNIS Router License includes the use of all DECNIS software functionality, including IP, DECnet, and OSI routing, and X.25 gateway services. It also allows use of local or remote bridging, Novell NetWare and AppleTalk routing, and the VCP protocol, all of which in previous software releases required separate software licenses. ---------------------------------------------------------- Does this imply that customer does not need a separate license for PC LAN and Appletalk when going to V4.0? In V3.0A, customer had to enter into LMF the license for PC LAN given that the DECNIS configurator checked for its presence. Is that not required for 4.0? Thanks Dennis

3556.1 | You don't need the PCLAN license anymore | RDGENG::GHOLLAND | Gary Holland - 830-6040 | Mon Mar 03 1997 04:00 | 23 |
With the introduction of the Windows 95/NT kit with DECNIS V4.0, we decided to remove the PCLAN license and the VCP license requirements. This applies to all new customers, whether they buy the Windows 95/NT, OpenVMS or Unix load host kits, and is documented in the SPD, sales literature and the cover letter. The OpenVMS and Unix installation procedures still make reference to the PCLAN and VCP license requirements. However, as the installation procedure has never been strictly LMF compliant and does not check the LMF database, this should not affect existing customers who have already purchased a license. The installation procedures will still work. DECNIS licensing has always relied on customer trust rather than a strict LMF enforcement (LMF is really designed for layered software, not down-loadable software). To comply with Digital's software licensing policy, the installation procedures were modified to ask these licensing questions. Unfortunately, the work to remove these questions from the existing OpenVMS and Unix installation procedures is not trivial, so we will have to live with them for the time being. Gary |
