Cross posted in the GIGAswitch/FDDI and DEChub notes file. At a university, we are proposing a GS/F with VNswitch 900EFs in each dorm. There will be 100-200 users per dorm and one or two VNswitch 900EFs. They want a separate subnet for each dorm. I can do the subnet configuration with either the routing upgrade on the VNswitch or IP Packet Switching. The problem is in using DHCP. What they want to do is assign the host address via DHCP and be able to determine the physical location of the request. They also want 1 or possibly 2 centralized DHCP servers. Cisco has proposed using Catlyst 5000 in each dorm and 5500 with a routing upgrde in the MDF. They will use VLANs and DHCP forwarding in the router to assign the correct subnet address. Is there anyway to do this with straight IP packet switching? They do not want to map MAC addresses on the DHCP server. Does the routing code in the DECswitch 900EF support this? Will the routing code in the VNswitch 900EF support this? Any other suggestions? --scott [email protected]
