4417.0. "Should this DEF6X/DEF1H config work?" by NNTPD::"[email protected]" (Jeff Smith) Thu May 15 1997 13:16

Customer has two DECConcentrator 900MXs both in DEChub One-MX docking
stations. Frimware revision is 3.3.2 on both conectrators.

One concentrator was configured as Stump AB and the other as Trunk AB.

He also has a Cisco 7000 setup with A and B out (something like Stump AB??).

When he connects from A from the Cisco to B of Stump AB, from A of Stump AB
to B of Trunk AB, then A of Trunk AB back to Cisco B.... B of Trunk AB rejects
the connection to Stump AB and the PHY light goes out and the Trunk AB unit is
no longer reachable via SNMP (ClearVISN).

                           A Cisco 7000 B

                           B A
                    [Stump AB] [Trunk AB]
                           A B

                            +--------------------------------+
                             ****
                             PHY light goes
                             out on this port!

The customer tried this as a test configuration. Since this didn't work, he
went back to both concentrators setup as Stump AB and everything worked. He
used the existing fiber cables, simply moving them from the front to the back.

Shouldn't this have worked?

What he wants to do is convert both concentrators to Trunk AB allowing more
front M ports and eventually "merging" this ring with another dual ring.

Any input would be appreciated!

Just a long shot ... is he trying the correct front panel ports (1 is A
and 6 is B) and DEChub ONE-MX ports?

The configuration should work. Have your customer remove the Cisco from the configuration until we figure
out what the problem is. Also, make sure the DEChub-ONE connections are from A-B and B-A.

re: .1

I'm not sure I understand the question....

The connection goes out of the front of one concentrator and into the back
of the other one, the out of the back of that concentrator to the Cisco 7000.

re: .2/.3

Pardon my drawing...it didn't translate very well through the notes gateway...

I gather then that there isn't an engineering (or other) reason that using the
front ports on one DC900 and the back ports of a DC900/DEChub One-MX in the
same dual ring.

I also gather that you suspect an issue with the Cisco 7000?

Can you elaborate?
